Review of BAKAS NI YAMASHITA: Anemic Adventure

Certified security guard Rick Bravo (Aron Villena) went to Pangasinan with his younger brother Johnnyboy (Joshua de Guzman) to visit his grandparents, Lake Berto (Lou Veloso) and Bae Hilda (Dexter Doria). It was also the first time Tom saw his cousin, Vince Cruz (Alfred Montero), who had been estranged from him for five years when Tom's parents died in a car accident.
Now Tom, a history teacher, is assisting Dean Pico Martinez (Archie Adamos) in his in-depth investigation into the location of the legendary Yamashita gold. One day, Dean Niigata (Yoshihiko Hara) is attacked by thugs led by a Japanese gangster, forcing him to reveal the location of the lost treasure maps. Soon, Niigita also came to Tom to ask for more information, and Rick joined the noise.
It was clear that director Danny Ugali's vision for this film was ambitious. It was an action-adventure, starring two young men searching for legendary treasures on so-called "living maps", while the samurai was chasing a ruthless villain. It is a shame that it is painfully obvious that his limited budget could not fund this vision as much as he would have liked.
Hence, he failed to establish himself as a big star with a bigger name. Aron Willen had a very good screen presence and more acting experience to play the right role here. However, his co-director Alfred Montero had odd facial expressions, body language and lines that still needed improvement. Joshua de Guzmán did a better job playing Johnnyboy naturally.
Krista Joxon was supposed to play an important role as graduate student Ayami, but her role was poorly written. Her character was layered, deserved more respect and could have been developed better, maybe even with her story. Instead, everything about Ayami was rushed and unintentionally funny, which was very unfortunate: the loss of an interesting character.
I liked the use of archival footage to tell Ugali's version of Yamashita's golden story, it makes the story more authentic. The inclusion of women from the Cordillera tribe in the story was great but it could have been done better. Too bad the climactic scene in the cave was so quick that what should have been a moment of great wonder turned into an anemic mood. 4/10
