One September afternoon in 1953, radio host Walter Winchell made a not-so-subtle joke that Lucille Ball was a communist. The next day, the cast and crew of the hit TV show Ball I Love Lucy gathered in the studio to film the next episode, not knowing if it would air that week. Meanwhile, Ball and her husband, the leader of the Cuban collective Desi Arnaz, face conflicts with actors, writers, managers and each other.
As a fan of pop culture, I know I love Lucy, but sorry I know I know shallow general knowledge. I've only seen a few of the more famous episodes, notably Vitameatwegamine and The Italian Film Lucy, both of which are mentioned in this biography. In the few scenes I did get to see, it was clear that Lucille Ball was a master of physical comedy who wasn't afraid to make fun of herself to the delight of the audience.
However, in this new film written by Aaron Sorkin, we see Lucille Ball in a different light behind the scenes. We saw how strict she was with the details of her program, even the seemingly trivial things. He talked to the writers and directors, he thought and rethought the block a few days before shooting. Comedy was difficult for her.
Another big problem for Ball is his marriage to Arnaz. She is four years older and he is often away from home on his concert tours. Ball always emphasized that although she was the star of her show, Arnaz had the final say in all business and artistic decisions, and she made sure to listen to him. Lucy Arnaz would have rejected the offer to star in this series, if not for the role of her husband Ricky Ricardo.
I felt that the main problem with this film was the choice of the main characters. Nicole Kidman was good as the calculating Lucille Ball, but she seemed too cool to be the eccentric Lucy Ricardo. Javier Bardem tried so hard to be the living Arnaz, probably because he didn't look like him. Nina Arianda was too young to play Vivian Vance , as were the actors who played Ricardo's neighbors Ethel and Fred Mertz , while JK Simmons looked too good for the role of William Frawley. Either way, you quickly get used to these actors due to their commitment to their roles.
The documentary approach was a practical way for Sorkin to tell his story. Scenes, costumes, and hairstyles successfully recreated the atmosphere of the 1940s and 1950s. Scripted rehearsals and scenes shot in front of a live audience helped immerse the audience in the showbiz lifestyle. Those you know will find surprise in the story of an unusually busy week in the lives of Lucy and Desi, but I'm not sure who they are. 7/10.
