MMFF 2021: Review of A HARD DAY: Perplexing Police Problems
20 December 2021 One night, Detective Edmond Villon (Dingdong Dantes) runs to wake his mother. At the same time, his colleagues from the intelligence department were being interrogated by the domestic affairs officials, so he had to be there. But while trying to escape a dog on the road, Villon swerves his car and crashes into a cruiser, killing him instantly.
After doing his best to get rid of the body of the man he accidentally killed, Villon realizes that the victim is Appyong, the man they are investigating in a major drug case. Not long after, Villon received constant phone calls from a man who saw what he had done and alerted the authorities.
The film's story and script are adapted from the South Korean hit film Dream, which premiered at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. The film has received numerous awards from all Korean award organizations. To director and screenwriter Kim Sung Hoon, and to the two main actors Lee Sung Gyun and Jo Jin Won. Its technical advantages are also noted.
This rich award-winning pedigree bodes well for this Filipino remake and is not a wasted prediction. Director Lou Fajardo completes this action thriller with his energetic and engaging directing and editing. Also featured is photography by Rodolfo Avez Jr. and a soundtrack by Peter Legast and Raphael Katap. Both Dingdong Dantes and John Clay put on powerful and entertaining performances.
With corrupt money-making scams, murderous tendencies and ugliness, Villon is no saint. However, Dingdong Dantes and his powerful rich aura made Villon a likable character to idolize. Right now, there was no question of the effectiveness of the villain that John Clay hated. Here, as the evil lieutenant Ace Franco, Clay does it all with a sense of humour, his trademark evil streak dripping freely into every scene.
Dantes and Clay are supported by a gallery of character actors who form the tight ensemble behind them. Villon's teammates at Intel are Al Tantai (as the boss), Janno Gibbs (as Arthur) and Harry Lim (as Elmer). The Villon family includes Meg Imperial (as is her sister Erica) and Liana K. Gimeno (as is her daughter Yanni). Notable supporting actors include Gelson Bay (as strict traffic officer) and Lou Veloso (as funeral director).
A smart and powerful action film like Hard Day is a welcome addition to this year's MMFF, as 2021 is dominated by goofy comedies, indie LGBT films, and thrillers. Fajardo makes car chases truly impressive. These raw action scenes are well choreographed and feel very close to Dantes and Clay. It really has a huge appeal, especially to male viewers. 8/10.
