CINEMALAYA 2022: Review of KALUSKOS: Double Dealing

12 August 2022

Rebekah (Coleen Garcia) is busy with her corporate career, while her husband Jay (Karl Medina) stays at home to care for their daughter Amaya (Queenzy Calma). When their marriage falls apart, Jay moves in with his girlfriend Azel (Cara Gonzales) while he and Rebekah fight over custody of Amaya. To complicate matters further, Rebecca is offered a promotion to work in Norway.

Amaya is not very close to her mother and this makes it difficult for Rebecca to manage her at home and at school. Amaya likes to wear a strange beak mask and constantly complains about wanting to live with her father. One night, after Rebecca put Amaya to sleep, she saw another Amaya under the bed, who said that she was hiding from monsters.

From the start, there's a decidedly unpleasant water theme: boats, torrential rain, showers, but it doesn't really lead anywhere. The plot of the film has nothing to do with water: no ship sinks, nothing sinks. Therefore, all of these scenes existed only to create an atmosphere of fear, nothing more.

There are incredible scenes where a character can perform incredible powers, such as lifting a wooden bed frame alone from a basement, crushing an overweight child from the ceiling, or killing an adult's body. straight drum. These details, even though they may be minor, can distract from the vision and logic of the film as a whole.

On the other hand, there are beautifully executed scenes by director Román Pérez Jr. One of them is the scene where you see two Amaya at once, a very shocking and critical scene that moves the plot. The library scene where Jay tries to appeal to Rebecca's better senses is well written and well shot, best scene for Karl Medina here.

I hope this mother-daughter story doesn't end in another major carnage, as some Vivamax films do. In my opinion, there was a scene before Rebecca and Amaya kissing happily for the first time that could have been a perfect ending. The decision may be to get a softer, smoother finish, but again the bolder and sharper option wins.

Love her or hate her, this film proves that Coleen Garcia is a good actress and can carry an entire film on her shoulders. Rebecca's role is almost a one-man show to showcase her various dramatic abilities. In fact, it's probably the actress' best tool if she doesn't have to run around in bloody underwear to climax. 5/10.
