MMFF 2021: Review of KUN MAUPAY MAN IT PANAHON: Deluge of Depression
December 21, 2021
It was November 2013. Yolanda, a super typhoon and a powerful typhoon, devastated the city of Tacloban and left it in total ruins. In the worst case scenario, Miguel (Daniel Padilla) is soon reunited with his girlfriend Andrea (Rance Refol) and later his mother Norma (Charo Santos). The three planned to catch a boat that would take them to Manila before the next typhoon hit.
Kun Maupai Man It Panahon (Warai Good Weather or Not) premiered at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland in August 2021 and toured several film festivals in Europe, Asia and America. He received the Cinema e Gioventu award in Locarno. Director's Award in London. In December , filming will finally begin in the area and at the Metro Manila Filmfest.
While its award-winning reputation may pique the interest of Filipino moviegoers, this is not a film to be taken lightly by MMFF audiences. In the past, the MMFF box office was dominated by small comedies from VC Ganda or Vic Soto. On the other hand, Kun Maupai is a film that elevates the film artist above popular entertainment.
This is the directorial debut of Carlos Francisco Manatada. He is known as one of the best film editors in the country before making short films shown in film festivals abroad. He is from Tacloban and started working on this film after returning home from typhoon Yolanda. 11 producers and a global pandemic later, their exciting project was finally completed to critical acclaim.
Miguel Daniela Padilla, who took orders from two women in his life, was mostly emotional. Padilla shines as an actress in the silent scenes in the film's final third, when the mob carries Miguel to the boat. The excellent blocking and composition of these scenes resulted in stunning imagery and dramatic impact, with Padilla's illustrator front and center doing all the work.
Rocky Rance plays Rifoll Andrea as a smart street girl who knows what she wants. He's very strong-willed and can fill the screen with tension when he's there, like the butcher and the chickens, or the mean comments he makes to Norma. There were some strange twists in the story, one involving a dog stranded on the beach and another involving a strange musical number.
Ms. Charo Santos Since then she has only appeared in Creepy (2019) and now this. His Norma was a woman determined to find her missing husband, Louis, despite her own suffering. Her last scene was a memorable dance, but her heartbreaking scene where she begged Miguel to hurt her was her highlight.
Compared to the other 7 films of the festival, this film had its own level of art. Los Angeles/Singaporean cinematographer Lim Teck Siang, production designer Wami Alcasa, and art directors Sam Manaxa and Nimrod Sarmiento are to be commended for their incredible work in recreating the death and destruction of Tacloban. The crowd control of the scenes was also impressive.
Matinee idol Daniel Padilla has legions of young fans, so you only have to give his name to see him and introduce him to the rich, slow and often weird world of arthouse cinema. It remains to be seen if the MMFF will now connect the film with the public and see it as a "tribute to the resilience, strength and perseverance of Filipinos" as the filmmakers had planned . Time: 8/10.
