Vivamax: Review of SISID: Marine Melodrama

January 18, 2022

Marine biologist Jason Abante (Paola Gambau) and his wife Abby (Kylie Versace) are celebrating their seventh wedding anniversary. The next day, they land in Pula, eastern Mindoro, where Jason works with the local government to protect the ocean from pollution by the mining company operating there. Local boy Dennis (Vince Rilla) is recruited to help Jason in his mission.

Famous film director Brillante Ma. Mendoza is best known for award-winning independent films such as Cannes in Serbia (2008), Chennae (2009, for which she won Best Director) and Ma Rosa (2013, for which Jacqueline José won Best actress). ) made her commercial debut last year with Vivamax's 'Politan', titled GL (Girls' Love). He returns this year with his second Vivamax project, this time as BL (Boys Love).

These two boys are no longer boys, but young men. They were not openly gay as both were involved with their partners. Jason had a wife, Abby, and Denise had a girlfriend, Tanya (Christine Bermas). Unexpectedly and without warning, during a stopover on a deserted island, secret greetings were offered with a simple hand cramp massage and a fun photo shoot with coconuts.

It was amazing how director Mendoza decided to make the main scene of their first sex without going overboard. At first they were alone in a boat in wetsuits, going about their business. Then suddenly they met face to face and kissed each other passionately, all without words. In the next scene, the two are dressed in their birthday suits and running around each other like they've been doing this all their lives.

As for the dramatic scenes, Gumabao and Relion did very well despite their embarrassing sex scenes. Versoza and Barmas' characters, however, follow tropes all too common in Filipino melodramas: the generous woman dying of cancer and the peasant girl whose secrets are betrayed by morning sickness. As always, Irma Adelvan stood out as Denise's pragmatic mother.

In typical Mendoza fashion, his camera simply follows the characters as they go about their daily lives, the entire first hour passing with little to no story development. The film had a strong environmental message as it opened with Powikan's stylish float bike and a town hall meeting between fishermen and mine managers. Such well-deserved protection enhanced the central love story. 5/10.
