Superheroes in the Philippines disappeared and no one knew where they were. The only superhero left in actual service was Mang Jose (Jano Gibbs), whose ability was to absorb and redirect energy. However, he was known to be independent, meaning he was considerate of the good deeds he did for the people.
Super villain King Ina (Manilyn Raines), whose powers reside in her hallucinogenic saliva, hatches a plan to give away free milk tea containing a chemical that will allow her to take control of all other superheroes. Before Tina Santos (Bing Loizaga) was captured, she was able to tell her son Tope (Mcoy Morales) to ask Mango Jose for help.
Jano Gibbs recently enjoyed a renaissance in his film career thanks to Viva Films. After his comeback in "Sanggano, Sanggago't Sanggwapo" (2019), he has "Pakboys Takusa" (2020) followed by "69+1" (2021). In addition to starring in this film as Mango Jose, he also played a key supporting role in the recent Viva MMFF entry A Hard Day.
Gibbs already has that laid-back, slapstick comedy style that has been his trademark for years. As a superhero, Mang Jose's character involved Gib in several action scenes. However, he also had many dramatic scenes as there was a complicated situation that involved him in the lives of Tina and Tope.
The comedy was mildly funny at best. It became fairly obvious whether his manager, Charlemagne (Gerald Napoles), was charging the people who helped them for their services, or whether King Ina's henchman, Lance (Gab Lagman) , was speaking a gay language through his Bane-like mask. . Names with vulgar colloquial meanings such as King Ina, Turborats, Barangay Salsalan, or Chikinini Motel were used.
A confused young top, Mikoy Morales kept up with Gibbs the whole time as the straight man in front of his lines. Manilyn Raines clearly enjoyed her villain role, the quirky headgear and costumes, and the '80s dance moves that King Ina loved, like the "Body Dancer" or the "Rico Mambo." The cast of Mannylin Raines and Bing Loyzaga in supporting roles became important to Filipino pop culture. Gianno-Manilin was one of the most popular love team on the TV show It's Fun in the 1980s. Celebrate their meeting in a feature film, albeit on different sides of the law. Bing Loysaga, Ms Jenna Gibbs of course.
Inspired by the 2005 song Parokya ni Edgar, this comedy about a local superhero was written by Carl Joseph Papa and directed by Rainier Brizwell. I felt that with a little more budget to improve the production design and graphics it could be more commercially viable than most of the work in the current MMFF. 6/10
