A skilled assassin named Ladybug is sent on an "easy" mission to retrieve a briefcase full of cash from a bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto. However, the same briefcase is followed on the train by other hitmen: British twins Tangerine (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) and Lemon (Brian Tyree Henry) who bring the Son (Logan Lerman) back to his mobster father, Death. White (Michael Shannon)) .
Meanwhile, British high school assassin Prince (Joey King) forces Japanese assassin Yuichi Kimura (Andrew Koji) to join him in a killing spree. Kimura's father, the Elder (Hiroyuki Sanada), also boarded the ship in search of his son. Joining the gang are Mexican killer Wolf (Benito Martinez Ocasio, aka current Billboard King Bad Bunny) and American killer Hornet (Jazy Beetz), who have their own plans.
It was great fun watching a great cast play the ruthless killers whose paths cross on this high-speed train. Brad Pitt looks bored here as a ladybug with existential issues who just can't seem to get a chance in life. Each had their own charm - the exuberant Aaron Taylor-Johnson and the jovial Brian Tyree Henry made an incredible team, the innocent Joey King played against the guys, Andrew Cozzy managed the brooding Robert Pattinson.
For me, the real star of this set is none other than Japanese film veteran and martial artist Hiroyuki Sanada. His screen presence and stellar charisma match, if not surpass, Brad Pitt. Whenever his Elder character appears on screen with a scar on his cheek, your attention is on him. His fight scenes with the samurai sword were by far the coolest.
Almost the entire film was set on the high-speed train of the same name, but the production designer made sure each car had its own personality. Japan's vibrant, colorful and diverse cultural landscape played a significant role in animating the overall mood of the film. The last thirty minutes were all CGI effects and an impressive display of everything that can happen inside and outside the express train.
Director David Leitch (who was Pitt's stunt double in films such as Fight Club and Troy) was responsible for the R-rated action comedy Deadpool 2 (in which Pitt made a guest appearance). He brought the same energy and humor here, with more characters to play with and more gore. There was so much chaos in this Tarantino-esque movie, and yet it was all so cleverly timed. A poisonous snake and the unexpected appearance of prominent guest stars added amusement to the chaos. 9/10
