Orphan (2009), a film that introduces us to Esther, a mischievous 9-year-old girl, directed by Colette-Serra and written by David Leslie Johnson, based on a story by Alex Massey. Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman) was a brilliant Russian orphan who was adopted by Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John (Peter Sarsgaard) Coleman. Soon Esther begins to destroy her poor foster family.
The whole movie was terrifying, Easter exploded in scenes where she put a child in danger, which happened multiple times. In addition to the psychological issues responsible for the killer's sociopathic behavior, a worse medical condition has been uncovered, which explains his physical appearance and unhappiness. Esther has become one of the most hated movie characters of all time.
The film's ending didn't leave it open to a sequel, so it came as a surprise when it was announced earlier this year that there would be a second Orphan film. What's even more surprising is that this new film will be a prequel and will still star the same actress, Isabelle Fuhrman, as Esther. Fuhrman was only 12 in the first film, so this year she'll be 25 when she plays Easter!
In this prequel, Lena Klammer, a brutal psychopathic killer, manages to escape from an asylum in Estonia. You are Allen and Tricia Albright (Julia Stiles and Rossif Sutherland), a wealthy American couple who use their daughter's petite frame to masquerade as Easter. Though Esther's manipulative skills aren't always perfect, Esther easily bonds with Allen over their shared love of art.
At first you'd think Esther would do to the Albrights what she did to the Colemans in the first film. As for the eldest son, Gunnar (Matthew Phelan), it was his mother who worried about Esther at first, but his father was unaware. The man and the woman had intercourse, but the jealous Esther prevented him. However, the filmmakers got a big surprise midway through the story that makes the prequel completely different.
Although this prequel seems watchable without having seen the first film, it is recommended that you watch the first film to better "appreciate" the franchise. The first film's big reveal is spoiled at the start of the prequels as you assume you've seen the first film. Director William Brent Bell used brief body shots in medium close-up shots to preserve the illusion of Easter as a child, but close-ups of Fuhrman's face can't belie her current age.
