Hazel Grace (Shailene Woodley) is a stage four cancer patient and her life finally feels meaningless until she meets the man who can give Hazel love and truth, Augustus Waters (Ansel Elgort).
Movies and books are two different media. The book can never be used as a screenplay. Also in movies. Cinema is also a medium that can literally show a book on a big screen. Many experts say that comparing movies to books is like comparing apples to oranges.
But what director Josh Bohn has done in adapting the TFIOS book into a film is truly commendable. Countless few Hollywood films and no production company in the world have been able to see the flow of the story from book to book without diminishing the content and importance of the book. As someone who has read and loved John Green's TFIOS, I have to admit that TFIOS is one of the most faithful adaptations of novels Hollywood has published in recent years.
But that doesn't mean TFIOS doesn't have its drawbacks. Like I said, order a script. Scott Neustadter and Michael H. We also encourage a great deal of book material in their manuscripts. The shoddy dialogue that only seemed to work on paper, as well as some scenes (that didn't look good in the novel) had to be improved to look better in the film setting. Fortunately, TFIOS manages to find the right rhythm towards the middle of the film, when all the great stuff happens.
As expected, the greatest strength of TFIOS is Shailene Woodley's charisma, beauty and acting power as Hazel Grace. To make the audience laugh when they laugh, upset when they cry, cry when they cry, from the beginning to the end of the movie. And this is a wonderful company. The same goes for his co-star Ansel Elgort. Many fans doubted that Ansel Elgort could play August Waters because he had supporting roles in the first two films, Carrie and Divergent. But luckily, he gets to show off his acting chops in his debut role in this film under the direction of Josh Boone and develops an incredibly compelling chemistry with Shailene Woodley. Laura Dern (and met her in Jurassic Park) also appeared as Hazel's mother. Although not much, the daughter of the great actor Bruce Dern managed to play one of his best roles.
All in all , there will be a lot of surprises when critics and media see TFIOS win the Oscars for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Picture (please google yourself if you don't believe me). Like the book, this film manages to turn the stereotypical formula of a teenage love story against cancer into an entertaining show, with brilliant dialogue , exceptional acting, heart-wrenching conflicts, and a glimpse into the lives of characters living in the protagonists' heads. The audience. And yes, you won't leave the cinema with dry eyes.
