Review of MARRY ME: Offhand Obligations

February 14, 2022

Superstar singer Kat Valdez (Jennifer Lopez) and her singer boyfriend Bastian (Maluma) were ready to perform her latest hit "Marry Me" on the main stage of their concert. However, while Kat is wearing a beautiful wedding dress for the upcoming ceremony, someone posts a sad video of Bastia dating someone else and it instantly goes viral.

Charlie Gilbert (Owen Wilson) was a regular math teacher and the coach of the high school track team. He is divorced and a single father to his 12-year-old daughter, Lou (Chloe Coleman). One evening, her colleague Parker (Sarah Silverman), a gay consultant, gives her and Louis tickets to Kate's concert with her. When Kat collapses on stage in despair, Charlie asks her to come on stage to marry him.

The movie itself was completely unrealistic. Imagine Kat in tears telling the audience how much she loves her, that she only wants this person. In a minor succession, for the first time he wanted to do something different. As she leaves with a "marry me" sign, she spots a lone Charlie in the audience and Kate says, "Yeah, I will." What could be more absurd and illogical?

The first part of the plot was hard to swallow. Jennifer Lopez ("The Wedding Planner", "Monster in Law", "The Handmaid in Manhattan") and Owen Wilson ("The Uninvited Guests", "How Do You Know", "Marley and Me") may seem blessed. They really managed to convince viewers that such a long-distance relationship can be real.

The film was almost entirely a Lopez spectacle as Kate rode the full spectrum of her emotional roller coaster, navigating a life of fame without critical acclaim or genuine love. It was Kat who ran into difficulties and Charlie accepted her decision. Lopez was completely in her element, playing a meta version of herself and how she yearned for a simpler life outside of the Kiligs. 6/10
