Vivamax: Review of THE WIFE: Unlikely Understanding
February 11, 2022 Mara (Luiza de los Reyes) and Chris (Diego Loizago) face serious marital problems when Chris starts a relationship with his college friend Lee (Kara Gonzalez). Apologies tried their best to calm the helpless Mara, but to no avail. One day he suddenly receives bad news from their doctor (Lander Vera Perez) that he has cancer and needs treatment. After hearing the bad news, Lee suddenly appeared at their door, offering to help.
Dennis O'Hara made his show business debut as a screenwriter for Judy Ann Santos and Piolo Pascual's soap opera Sa Piling Mo (2006). Later, he became the main screenwriter of the most successful TV series such as "Maria la del Barrio" (2011-12), "Mundo Man a Magunao" (2012) and "Please be careful with my heart" (2012-14). ) He then moved into film, writing with Joseph Israel Laban independent films such as Purgatorio (2016) and Baconua (2017).
The first film he wrote for the 2018 Cinemaloy Film Festival was Mameng, which also marked his directorial debut. He won the Gawad Urian Award for Best Director for this film, and his screenplay was also nominated. In 2019, he wrote and directed Tayo Muna Kahit Hindi Pa Tayo for the CinemaOne Originals Film Festival. The current project, Woman, is the third film he has written and directed.
This story was told from the perspective of a female character. In Philippine melodrama, the female martyr is a frequent character in both film and television. What distinguishes this Mara from other female martyrs is that she did not remain silent about her suffering. In keeping with her name, Mara means "bitter" in Hebrew), she vented her anger at Chris through her daily emotional outbursts. He was never going to let it go until Big C intervened.
While Mara is unaware of her situation, Lee offers to take care of Chris. That was the essence of the story: how an unlikely partnership developed between two women who should have been mortal enemies. The idea was good, but the execution, unfortunately, failed. You knew where the plot was going, but how it got there was incredible.
Due to awkward exchanges of dialogue during this crucial part of the film, the chemistry between de los Reyes and Gonzalez never solidifies as true friends. Perhaps it was Gonzalez's relative inexperience as an actress, or perhaps the way her character was written, but Leigh's sincerity was questionable. A deeper and more experienced actress was needed to effectively transform this complex character from enemy to friend.
For those curious, yes, there were gratuitous sex scenes for both actresses with bare breasts and Loyzaga holding up her pants. But these physical scenes were only peripheral, not front and center like last year's typical Vivamax feature. Considering that this movie was written and directed by women for a female audience, these sex scenes were pretty weird, especially since they shouldn't have been there. 4/10.
