Review of THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER: Heroic Humor

July 5, 2022

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) has recovered from post-depressive obesity and said goodbye to the Guardians of the Galaxy. When he returns to New Asgard, the city is attacked by ghostly creatures who kidnap children. Thor fights back against the intruders with his lightning axe. He is surprised to find his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) in the middle of the fight, brandishing her old hammer, Mjolnir.

Behind the kidnapping of the Asgardian children is Gor (Christian Bale), who is called the God of Butchers because he wanted to kill all the gods with a special sword called Necroskur, All Black. Thor, Jane, Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), the King of New Asgard and stone gladiator Korg (Taika Waititi) go to the aid of the Olympian god Zeus (Russell Crowe) before embarking on a dangerous rescue mission.

This is the fourth MCU film starring Thor and the second directed by Taika Waititi. With Waititi comes his shameless sense of humor, so despite heavy subjects like cancer, murder, and kidnapping, comedy will still be a big part of this installment. A few of the comedy steps out of line for me, especially in the trailer with Russell Crowe's self-explanatory Zeus caricature.

Almost everyone made fun of their characters, even Natalie Portman and Tessa Thompson. Korg told the main story with ease, as if he were telling children a bedtime story. After their brief stints in Ragnarok, Sam Neill, Liam Hemsworth and Matt Damon return to their crazy theatrical roles with new guests. The post-credits scene is shot so awkwardly that it looks like a weird comedy joke.

The only completely serious actor here is Christian Bale as Gore. The first five minutes of the film are devoted to his past story, how he became a butcher god. As expected of Bale, he stays completely true to this tragic character with his pale skin and thin frame. (I've never seen anything like this, but he has an annoying mole between his right eye and the bridge of his nose that you might want to look out for.)

The film's soundtrack is dominated by 80's hard rock band Guns N' Roses. We have already heard "My Sweet Child" in the trailer. Three more GNR songs will be featured in the mix, including "Paradise City," "Welcome to the Jungle," and "November Rain." This GNR fixation is even included in the script when Heimdall's son is preferred to be named Axel (as GNR's frontman) rather than Asgardia. 7/10.
