In 1978, there was a series of disappearances of young people in north Denver, perpetrated by a mysterious man called "The Trapper". One day, on his way home from school, Finny Blake (Mason Thames) comes across a middle-aged man (Ethan Hawke) dressed in black standing in front of his black truck and invites Finny over if he wants to see some magic. : When Finny asks about the black balls in the truck, he is pushed inside and kidnapped.
Writer-director Scott Derrickson (The Six Demons of Emily Rose, Doctor Strange) adapted the plot from Joe Hill's 2004 short story of the same name. It effectively recreated the suburban atmosphere of small-town America in the late 1970s with meticulous production design, costume design, hair and makeup, and a classic rock soundtrack. Cinematographer Brett Yutkiewicz shot the action with a filter that made the colors appear washed out like in old movies from those years.
The crime scene related to the kidnappings and serial murders of teenagers was already a disturbing enough topic. The reality aspect was reinforced by scenes of severe bullying in schools and brutal violence at home. However, this story added an increasingly creepy factor, with reference to the supernatural. Finny had a precocious younger sister, Gwen (the wonderful Madeleine McGraw), who had psychic abilities to tell dreams.
The title refers to a blackface telephone mounted on the wall next to the bed in the room where Finney was held captive. Those phone wires were cut, to Finny's dismay, but one day they began to ring. As Finney picked up the phone from the manger, he heard several disembodied voices trying to give him advice on possible ways to escape from prison and a crazy masked captor.
Child actors Thames (14) and McGraw (13) are too sweet and friendly for us. Ethan Hawke (star of Derrickson's 2012 film Mad Men) was downright crazy and terrifying as the unpredictable masked Grabber, though little is known about him. James Ranson (also from Sinister and its 2015 sequel) had fun as Max, Grabber's brother. Jeremy Davis gave off a bad vibe as Finny and Gwen's father.
The film ripped off Stephen King's It and Netflix's Stranger Things with its mix of kids, crime, supernatural, and pop culture, but managed to create its own brand of bone-chilling suspense. Though you may sometimes wonder why Gravitch left so many items around the room for the kids to use as equipment for their escape attempts. 7/10.
