Vivamax: Review of THE INFLUENCER: Alarming Attraction

August 14, 2022

Excel Santos (Sin de Guzman) is a very popular social media personality. She posts her product videos and they always go viral. He is usually in a group of blogging friends that includes rich kids Anna (Quinn Carrillo) and Andrew (Carl Aquino). Axel was very popular with his female fans, but was known to avoid commitment and collect one-night stands.

Axl meets Nina (Chloe Barrett) at a bar one night and, in his usual style, takes her to an apartment he borrowed from a friend for wild sex and immediately orders them to leave. Axel thinks Nina is different from other girls and invites her for a second date. From then on, Nina starts following Excel, even the other girls he chooses. Nina doesn't seem to mind when Axel tells her to leave him alone.

After a very successful first year last year in 2021, Sean de Guzman wants to catch up by making it his second big star in 2022 after Hugas earlier this year. However, de Guzmán's striking looks are mistaken for a charismatic online influencer. His vlogs were light and fluffy, understated, charming and even entertaining enough to go viral. His speech was dull, colorless and eloquent.

Chloe Barrett rose from obscurity and starred in two Vivamax films this year – Selab and Tahan – in both of which she plays crazy and strong women. This time he was one of the hosts again and boldly tackled a role inspired by Crazy, Glenn Close and Kathy Bates. However, Barrett still lacked the acting maturity to elevate her role as Nina beyond typical psychotic sex.

After Vivamax produced "Biak" and "Tahan," Quinn Carrillo received a third writing credit. As before, Carrillo can also play the last line character. The plot follows Adrian Lean's Fatal Attraction (1988) in the first half, then Rob Reiner's Furnace (1990) in the second half, followed by a bit of flirting. Excel's playfulness made the film meet Vivamax's standards for sex scenes.

What made Carrillo's story stand out from his films was how he incorporated local social media culture into the story. Pieces of this were scattered throughout the film, but it would be better to dwell on this interesting event in more detail. Carrillo saves the best for the closing scene, which provides a sobering insight into the complicated nature of these "exemplary" networks. 4/10.
