In 2021, the Covid-19 pandemic has risen again, so for the first 10 months, we can only watch Filipino movies on sites like Netflix, KTX and Upstream. New this year is Vivamax, which is sure to raise the bar by introducing a new Filipino movie every Friday. Most of them may be cheesy comedies or cheesy thrillers, but Vivamax has single-handedly saved the local film industry this year.
But since vaccinations were effective before March, plans to reopen theaters were finalized by mid-November. Hybrid QCinema Filmfest at Gateway Cineplex will screen several feature films, including a new Filipino film. On Christmas Day at the Metro Manila Filmfest, eight films are screened exclusively in theaters despite previous box-office MMFF titles such as Vice Double or Vic Soto.

Convincing herself that she has a good man who can take care of her now that Cream isn't in her life, Kay asks John's girlfriend Kathy (Arila Arida) to help bring them together.
In the first single, Panner is Rafi Larma, a veteran photojournalist bent on beating EJK. The second single is dedicated to Rosing, whose husband Marcelo, a Zumba instructor, and their son Jojo were shot dead as drug addicts. The third single is about an unnamed police officer who is assigned as an EJK pilot. The fourth single is dedicated to Vanessa, a teenage girl who wants to place a candle on her parents' graves.
Eight days before he went into quarantine, Superintendent of Education Arlen "Len" Esguerra got into a fight with Carlo "Kala" Cabahug on social media. That night, he invites his best friends Joe (Jesh Behrs) and Mark (Victor Anastasio) to an online drinking session to talk about his online experience. Despite TJ (Piolo Pasquale) and Amanda (Alessandra De Rossi) going by silly nicknames like Fluffy and Freem, they maintain a close platonic friendship over the years. They enjoy spending lazy nights together and star gazing as they talk about their wild adventures. They have romantic relationships with other people, but they remain steadfast in their lives.
Policewoman Mariano (Maya Salvador) survives a bloody attack by a political witness with whom she was at a press conference. Despite being wounded, he flees to the nearby hills to escape his pursuers led by Officer Sonny (Mon Confido). Mariano's suffering in the desert is relieved by the arrival of a young compatriot named Navi (Sheila Anne Rovaldo), who takes care of him until he can save his family.

Detective Vilo (Dingdong Dantes) crashes his car into a pedestrian. After trying his best to get rid of the body of a man who was accidentally killed, the villain realizes that the victim is a man involved in a major drug case they are investigating. Villon soon began receiving constant phone calls from someone who allegedly witnessed his actions and threatened to report him to the authorities.
When wedding plans go awry, ventriloquist Hernando Alamada (John Lloyd Cruz) wanders aimlessly. Along the way, he meets Joselito (Jonathan Francisco), Dahlia (Dolly de Leon) and Sister Lorenza (May Panner), who want to take a boat to Barrio Dang Tapa to Isla Diwata, where gold is mined. There they will encounter strict rules set by the middle village chief Quang (Tera Guzmán).
As elections approach and La Paz Mayor Pedring Eusebio (Dante Rioro) prepares to run for vice president, two local La Paz journalists experience a life-changing event. They are pro-Eusebio radio host Cisa Salas (John Arcilla) and anti-Eusebio newspaper publisher Arnel Pangan (Christopher De Leon).
The film (screened domestically as a 4-part series on HBO Go) is well-made and meaningful, with a poignant message and a keen eye for the issues behind the headlines. The classic tragedy (based on the 2009 Maguindanao massacre) may dampen the awe of Filipino viewers a bit, but it still leaves a powerful viewing experience.
