Marta de Jesus (Christine Barmas) had just given birth to a stillborn baby girl and was deeply depressed. Her husband Carla (Rush Flores) was cold to her and made out with her boyfriend. Her mother Lourdes (Tubs Sumulong) suffers from dementia, does not recognize her and searches for her missing sister Aurora (Sherri Batista). Their psychiatrist, Dr. Rose Yulo (Andre Del Rosario), gets into a car accident after consulting with Marta and Carlo.
The action moves to a rural hospital in the town of Nilapakan. Marta was a new nurse hired by the regional health department to carry a box of native medicine to the medical center on Isla Bata. He was brought to the island by boatman Raleigh (Massimo Schofield). He gets on a motorcycle that Leloy (Sean de Guzmán) rides to the clinic, where he meets midwife Tess (Zela Cuenca).
Veteran director Joel Lamangan's latest film oscillates between painful reality and nightmarish fantasy between life and death. Religion is a very important part of history. Martha's bus to Nilapakan was carrying a zealous preacher (Rolly Inocencio). On Bato Island itself there was a fanatical cult led by their mad mistress (Jim Pebanko) who performed baptisms, healings and burials.
The story was there, but not realized. It was only an hour and a half long, but the pace seemed slow. Scenes were exposed and littered with clumsy dialogue. For example, Martha still had to ask the bus driver where the hospital was when he dropped her off near the hospital. Martha also had to ask Leloy if he was sure he brought her to the clinic when it was clearly written above the clinic door.
Unfortunately, Bermas couldn't get out of the quagmire of this movie with all its problematic productions, costumes and hair choices, not to mention all the medical violence. Cuenca and de Guzmán looked very upset. Flores was surprisingly wooden. The sexual scenes here were shot without imagination and the actors looked unprepared. There was no particular need for them, and they were included in the story for the sake of the Vivamax brand. I just saw the island, but there is no desire. 2/10.
