HBO GO: Review of MOONSHOT: Missing the Magic

April 3, 2022

The year is 2049. Walt (Cole Sprouse) works as Gary's assistant bartender robot in a college canteen. From childhood, his greatest ambition was to go to Mars, influenced by the admiration of pioneer astronaut Leon Covey (Zach Braff). He has applied to Covey Industries' Student Mars program more than 30 times, but his applications have been rejected multiple times.

Sophie (Lana Condor) works on her research aimed at solving the global problem of waste disposal with plants. She was in a long-distance relationship with her boyfriend Calvin (Mason Gooding), who worked on Mars for a while. Despite his fear of flying, Walt convinces Sophie to buy a ticket to Mars and then board a rocket from where he started.

Despite the name, the moon has nothing to do with this story, but maybe the "Arrow of Mars" doesn't sound as good. The futuristic setting was fun because pseudo-scientific jargon can be fun. However, they can't hide the all-too-familiar young adult romance it's based on. The story of two opposite poles, first confronting and then interacting, was stereotypical and entirely predictable.

Cole Sprouse and Lana Condor were excellent characters. Sprouse was charming as Walt, a loser who didn't care about being ignored by others any more than he wanted to go to Mars. Condor was believable as Sophie, a brilliant young scientist who knows she must sacrifice her career aspirations for love.

However, Walt and Sophie's romantic chemistry didn't make for romance. It seems best if they remain friends and not lovers. Condor's Sophie has the best chemistry with her longtime boyfriend Calvin, while Spruce's Walt has the best chemistry with the beautiful Ginny (Emily Rudd) with whom he falls in love and chases Mars. 5/10
