THE CIRCLE (2017) REVIEW

With such great ideas and thought-provoking themes, The Circle was without a doubt the most interesting techno-thriller of the year. But it ends differently. So what was wrong?

The Circle begins with May (Emma Watson), a beautiful, intelligent young woman struggling to find a good job to support her family. One day, May learns that her best friend Annie (Karen Gillan) has set up an interview for The Circle, the world's largest technology company. And of course he passed the interview.

But things take a turn for the worse when her new boss, Bailey (Tom Hanks), introduces new camera technology that combines with her instincts to control the full transparency of her social program, The Circle (ironically in the movie). Lock down the world and erase people's privacy for good.

To be honest, the race started hard. Compensation and the difficult subject matter promise to be another hit for writer/director James Ponsault (the man who brought you the Sundance hit "The Wonderful Now"). Unfortunately, the final product is so ridiculous it almost looks like a Google April Fool's joke. The screenplay relies heavily on “what if” concepts to tell the story. What if the government agrees? What if the people agree? What if social networks were a tool of terrorism? What if the world didn't want your privacy? But with such a big theme, it never crosses the line of "what if" because everything happens perfectly and takes place in one big building, the headquarters of the circle, without any significant struggle or conflict in the process. As a result, the entire film feels like a dull and pointless first act, with the second and third acts never coming to fruition until the credits suddenly roll on the screen and the light shines on your disappointed and shocked faces.

Even the character arcs are incredibly confusing. They have no clear purpose. They are not friends. They don't react or feel like normal people, which makes them all look like weird and creepy cyborgs (maybe that's the point? Who knows). There are plenty of spoiled supporting characters, like John Boyega's I Don't Know What She's Doing, or Patton Oswalt's mysterious Stanton, or Karen Gillan's Annie, who disappears through magical powers and reappears as ashes. A "junkie" with no explanation other than public guesswork. Even big stars like Tom Hanks and Emma Watson couldn't save it.

A big thing that made me want to finish the whole movie is the theme and the big "what if" thought they put on screen several times. Social media addiction, cyberbullying, internet disruptors, and live apps like Instagram Stories or Snapchat, which challenge users' privacy from the start, are all related to our current situation. For most of the movie, The Circle tries to predict the future by putting these social media apps on steroids, but ultimately decides to abandon those ideas when it comes to the exposition. Most of these ideas are very interesting and thought-provoking, don't get me wrong. But in the end, a poorly developed idea, no matter how good, is just an unrealized opportunity.

Verdict: With such big ideas and thought-provoking themes, Circle was sure to be the hottest techno thriller of the year. But this could be another huge disappointment for both sci-fi fans and casual viewers who are expecting a good thriller from the incredible cast and talent behind it.
