Review of DEATH ON THE NILE (2022): Murders Most Melodramatic

Jacqueline de Bellefort introduces her handsome but poor boyfriend Simon Boyle to her wealthy friend Lynette Ridgeway. However, it is later revealed that Simon has left Jackie and married Lynette. When the newlyweds go to Egypt for their honeymoon, a rejected Jackie follows them and even books a Nile cruise on a Karnak riverboat, which the Doyles also booked. .
One night there was a murder on board, someone was shot in the forehead at close range. When famed Belgian detective Hercule Poirot begins his investigation, every passenger on the cruise ship seems to have a reason to kill the victim, which turns out to be hideous. There were still a few murders to be done before Poirot could finally come up with a comprehensive plan.
In the original 1978 film Death on the Nile directed by John Guillermin, Peter Ustinov played Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, replacing Albert Finney who played Poirot in Murder on the Orient Express (1974). As in the first film, the murders take place indoors (this time on a riverboat). The film also features a cast of actors who play suspects in the Lynette Ridgeway (Lois Chiles) murder.
The star cast includes Bette Davis (as grande dame Mary Van Schuyler), Maggie Smith (his stern nurse, Mrs. Bower), Angela Lansbury (later romance writer Salome Otterbourne), Olivia Hussey (his troubled daughter Rosalie) and Jack Worden (Dr. Bessler defends himself), George Kennedy (rogue lawyer Andrew Pendleton), Jane Birkin (Lynnett's maid Louise), Mia Farrow (Jackie) and Simon McCorkindale (Simon).
In this new remake, Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) investigates the Lynette Ridgeway (Gal Gadot) case. Simon (Armie Hammer) is her husband, Jackie (Emma Mackie) her friend and Louise (Rose Leslie) her maid. Some characters have the same name but different relationships. Mary Van Schuyler (Jennifer Saunders) is now Lynette's godmother and Mrs. Bowers (French Dawn) is her nurse. Salome Otterbourne (Sophie Okenedo) is now a blues singer, while her niece Rosalie (Letitia Wright) is Lynette's best friend.
There are also characters whose names and relationships to Lynette have been changed. The lawyer is now Lynette's cousin Andrew Kachadourian (Ali Faizal). The doctor's character is now Lynette's ex-boyfriend Linus Windlesham (Russell Brandt). Instead of Colonel Race, David Niven played Poirot Bauck's friend (Tom Bateman), who was also on the Orient Express in the previous case. Bauke takes in his artist mother Euphemia (Annette Benning) and develops a romantic relationship with Rosalie.
Gal Gadot is the perfect match for a charming heiress. However, unlike Lois Chiles, she doesn't project Linnet's snobbery either. Emma Mackie (whom I had never met before in this movie) had a more challenging role than Jackie. However, she looks strong and confident, unlike Mia Farrow, who gives Jackie the vulnerable, clingy, needy vibe this character needs. Armie Hammer's screen presence decreased with each film, even in the role of Simon. Tom Bateman even beat him to the supporting role of Bauk.
Apart from the prologue (why Poirot grows his handsome mustache) and the conclusion (how Poirot can fall in love again), the main plot of the novel remains the same, with significant changes to promote contemporary causes such as multiculturalism and LGBTQ. illustration Production patterns are filled with 1930s luxury and exotic Egyptian antiques. With a much darker color palette and a serious vibe, Branagh's approach tends to be quite melodramatic, especially in the climax, without any real humor.
Death of the Nile (1978): 8/10. Death on the Nile (2022) 7/10.
