HBO Go: Review of BLUE BAYOU: Adoption Altercations

Antonio LeBlanc (Justin Chong) was a Korean boy who was adopted by a poor mother. He was adopted by an American couple and brought to the United States at the age of three, but growing up in Louisiana, the boy did not fare well. He had several run-ins with the motorcycle-stealing police, which made it difficult to find a good job. He barely made ends meet by working as a tattoo artist.

Antonio is now married to physical therapist Cathy (Alicia Vikander) and expecting a new child. Antonio is also very close to Cathy's wild daughter Jessie (Sidney Kowalski), whom her real father Ace (Mark O'Brien) despises, abandoning her as a child. One day, an argument with Ace's partner, police officer Danny (Emory Cohen), raises previously unresolved questions about Antonio's citizenship, which could lead to his deportation.

This film is about a problem that affects some children who are adopted by American families and later deported as adults because their parents never properly formalized their citizenship. These children have been raised as Americans for most of their lives, but face the prospect of being sent to a country they know nothing about. It was a very interesting subject, full of dramatic possibilities.

Oscar winner Alicia Vikander played Cathy, Antonio's supportive wife whose patience (and reading ability) will be tested along the way. The main scene-stealer was Sydney Kowalske, the charming child actress as Jessie, whose airport scene was the emotional moment of the entire film. There was also an interesting subplot about Parker (Lin-Dan Pham), a Vietnamese woman who helps a lost Antonio get the right idea .

But this movie was about Justin Chon who wrote, directed and starred in this movie. Wendy Wu on Disney Channel. After appearing in The Homecoming Warrior and Twilight, the Korean-American actor finally started writing and directing his own films and made waves at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival with Hawk. it won him the Grand Jury Prize for best film and best director.

His portrayal of Antonio in Blue Bayou was very honest and nuanced. This man has had a hard life, a history of crime and violence, but you still feel his inner goodness as a person. You may be prone to dreamy melodramas in some scenes, but you will be moved or even moved to tears. Jung put together a lot of heavy parts that let the film down a bit, but his passion for his mission was very evident. 8/10.
