Netflix: Review of PERSUASION: Altered Austen

July 16, 2022

Anne (Dakota Johnson) was the second daughter of the conceited and arrogant Sir Walter Elliot (Richard E. Grant). She was supposed to marry Frederick Wentworth (Cosmo Jarvis), but he had no title or wealth. Lady Russell (Nikki Amuka-Bird), her godmother whom she regarded as her second mother, convinced Anne to give her up. It was a difficult decision that Anne could never move on from.

Eight years later, Wentworth returned home as a veteran British Navy captain, leaving Anne with her younger sister Mary (a totally over-the-top Mia McKenna-Bruce) and her family. Anne and Wentworth were reunited but there was still a lot of tension between them. The two are involved with each other: Wentworth is Mary's (Nia Towle) stepmother Louise and Anne is the rich cousin Mr. William Elliot (Henry Golding).

In her books, Jane Austen has told fascinating stories that have produced wonderful film adaptations. His popular novels, turned into films or miniseries, are: Pride and Prejudice (17 adaptations, with Oscar-winning versions in 1940 and 1995), Emma (12 adaptations, with Clueless as the famous modern fiction) and "The Mind and feelings". (5 film adaptations, the most famous of which is Emma Thompson's Oscar-winning version).

Not to be outdone, Persuasion was broadcast on TV 6 times, the most popular being the 1995 version with Amanda Root as Anne and Ciaran Hinds as Wentworth and the 2005 version with Sally Hawkins as Anne and Rupert Penry-Jones as Wentworth. There were also five theatrical adaptations of the same novel, all set in the second decade of the new millennium.

Dakota Johnson as Anne broke the fourth wall by talking to the camera and sharing her thoughts with us. His side was by far the prettiest of the Eliot girls, so it was hard to see why she was considered less suitable. However, to make it fashionable, she was forced to say millennial slang like "we were" and "she's ten" and act like a thug like drinking wine from a bottle and peeing behind a tree, which she definitely it was not. quite Austen.

This Netflix release also took inspiration from one of Netflix's most popular series, Bridgerton, casting black actors to play Lady Russell, the Musgroves and Captain Benwick, and an Asian actor to play William Elliott. There were also lines supporting feminist ideals, which is very common in recent films. However, the charm of Austen's story still managed to shine through all the changes for the currently savvy generation. 6/10
