Review of TOP GUN: MAVERICK: Soaring Speed Spectacle

After 36 years of distinguished service in the US Navy, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell still held the lowly rank of captain and was still involved in testing the latest fighter jets. Under the command of his former rival and then-friend, now Admiral Tom "The Iceman" Kazansky, Maverick is unexpectedly tasked with training a group of young pilots on a dangerous mission to bomb an unnamed uranium plant in treacherous mountains with heavy weapons. The enemy. Square.

One of the pilots of the Maverick group is a lieutenant. Bradley "Han" Bradshaw. Rooster was Maverick's best friend and the son of radar intercept officer Nick "The Goose" Bradshaw, whose death Maverick always felt guilty about. The Register also accused Maverick of prematurely withdrawing his candidacy and delaying his enlistment in the Navy. Meanwhile, Maverick reunites with old friend Penny Benjamin, a single mother who now owns a local bar where Navy pilots used to hang out.

The first film, Top Gun, was a box office hit in 1986, grossing over $176 million in the US alone. It established Tom Cruise as a true superstar and boosted the careers of Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards. His soundtrack album was also a huge hit, going 9 times platinum. It includes Berlin's No. 1 hit and Oscar-winning song "Take My Breath Away" and some songs by Kenny Loggins, "Playing with Boys" and "Danger Zone" (the beat of which was played in the opening scene of this suite).

Set 36 years after the events of the first film, Maverick is a tough man who walks to his own drum with emotional baggage. Perhaps only he, the ageless Tom Cruise (now 59), could perform convincingly daring and dangerous physical stunts and beautiful and funny romances with Miles Teller and a young cast. Jennifer Connelly (whose character was actually named Penny in the first movie) is interested. The dramatic moment was the scene with the disabled Val Kilmer.

As for Rooster, Miles Teller, with that moustache, Anthony Edwards looked suspiciously like a goose, so we feel Maverick's extreme discomfort at being in the same room with him. Maverick and Rooster will have an incredibly close encounter with the enemy in the final act, but like a Hollywood blockbuster, we suspend disbelief and cheer them on. Phoenix (Monica Barbaro) was the only woman who stood out among the other pilots, while Kat (Glenn Powell) channeled Iceman's arrogance.

The first movie had a lot of emotional links, so it's probably best to re-watch the original before watching this sequel to get a better emotional connection with the whole story. Don't worry if you can't, because there are plenty of flashbacks to remind you of what happened, like the piano singing "Great Ball of Fire" or Goose's fatal ejection. The pilots playing shirtless touch football on the beach clearly recreates the intense shirtless beach volleyball scene from the first film.

But like the original film, the best parts of this film are the thrilling and heart-wrenching flight scenes that would have been achieved without computer-generated effects. We see Maverick pilot an experimental Mach 10 aircraft, an F-18 Super Hornet, and even an F-14 Tomcat (as a nice reminder of the first film). He also participated in dogfights with enemy jets, as well as low-altitude air maneuvers against missiles. The beautiful cinematography and editing give the impression that Cruise was actually piloting these planes, when in fact he was not. 9/10
