Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) Review
It's not uncommon for Marvel to do something completely different with their sequels. From the surprising direction they took from Captain America: The Winter Soldier to the controversial Iron Man 3, Marvel carried out very expensive experiments with their risky but highly calculated formula and turned it into a billion dollar success. So why didn't they do it in their weirdest movie, Guardians of the Galaxy?
Yes, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 completely different sequels. It doesn't follow the winning formula from the first volume or try to expand the universe that almost any franchise can. Instead, vol. 2 Pay attention when answering questions. If the first film was like Joss Whedon's Firefly, Vol. 2 like Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. No, I didn't mean this package. 2 is a better film than the first release. I'm talking about the overall theme and how different it is from its predecessor.
GotG Vol. 2 begins with Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) mysteriously appearing in outer space with his long-lost father Ego (Kurt Russell) and saving the Guardians from their new client Aisha (Elizabeth Debicki). Nebula (Karen Gillan). He then immediately recruits Yondu (Michael Rooker) and his team of space pirates, The Ravager, to hunt down the Guardians and destroy them forever. But the Ravagers have an agenda of their own.
Not much to like about GotG Vol. 2 to say without spoiling all the fun. That's why all the trailers they release only show the first 15 minutes of the film. Yes, you read it right. If you're already fascinated by the trailer, prepare to be blown away. Action Shots and Sequences in GotG Vol. 2 Too Crazy; Bigger, funnier and crazier than Vol. 1.
GotG Vol. The main theme of 2 now is about family (which may explain why some interesting characters like Nova Corporation and Collector from Volume 1 don't appear). Peter Quill tries to uncover his dark past with a mysterious father figure. Gamora and Nebula strive to have a healthy relationship as sisters. Other secondary characters, Rocket and Yondu, also now have more time to tell their own stories and develop characters in more depth as they spend more time with Baby Groot. And finally, the hilarious film duo Drax and Mantis will make you laugh every time they appear on screen.
But among the returning and new characters, Yondu is the one who stands out the most (well, second only to Baby Groot if he's too cute for you). Writer/director James Gunn makes him one of the best supporting characters the MCU has ever seen. His background and real reason for his return in Volume 1 and the first half of Volume 2 will have you crying like a baby. His introduction in volume 2 reminds me of the goofy Professor Snape from the Harry Potter series.
Plus, like any other Marvel movie, there will be lots of Easter eggs, extra credit scenes (there are five of them!), and a surprise introduction for the new Marvel superheroes coming in 2020 as part of Phase 4 of the MCU.
Unfortunately, GotG has vol. 2 still has one major flaw that all Marvel fans have been screaming about for almost a decade. Bad. 2 ... suck. The first GotG is remembered as the first film in the MCU to introduce the big villains Avengers, Thanos, and the upcoming Infinity Stones, and do a terrible thing to our heroes through Ronan The Accuser. Unfortunately, they don't return in volume. 2. Instead, Marvel uses a boring new roster of villains. And to make matters worse, a lot of them were just set up for the inevitable Phase 4 of the MCU. I won't spoil what the main villain is, but it's nothing compared to Thanos. He's not as ugly and memorable as Malekith (yes, you might forget who he is), but he's not far off.
Verdict: Weak in storyline, but strong in character and relationship development, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is now a Star Wars-style family drama, with stunning graphics and great chemistry to make it as surprising and entertaining as Vol. 1 to do.
