Krypton has been Kal-El's pet and friend ever since he was sent into space when his parents destroyed his home planet Krypton as a child. Ever since Kal-el finally became Superman, Krypto has always been his companion on a mission and his only friend. However, there comes a time when Superman spends more time with Lois Lane and plans to marry her. When Krypto takes him to an animal shelter to find a new friend, Krypto gets worried.

Rejected pets at the animal shelter include Ace the boxer dog, PB the pot-bellied pig, Merton the blind turtle, Chip the red squirrel, and Lulu Lex Luthor the hairless guinea pig. One day, the evil Lulu discovers a piece of orange kryptonite that gives her superpowers to fulfill her dream of world domination. When Superman and the rest of the Justice League are kidnapped, the other shelter animals use their newfound powers to save Krypto.

It was fun to see the end credits showing who the voice actors were behind the different characters. It was surprising to see so many major players in the cast, including Dwayne Johnson (as Krypto), Kevin Hart (as Ace), John Krasinski (as Superman), Natasha Lyonne (as Merton), Diego Luna (as Chip). . SNL stars Kate McKinnon (as Lulu) and Vanessa Bayer (as PB) and my favorite, Keanu Reeves (as Batman).

In fact, it turned out to be one of the best DC movies ever released, live-action or animated. Writer-director Jared Stern was behind The Lego Batman Movie (2017) and his sense of humor was fun and familiar. He was a very serious Superman (along with Richard Donner's 1976 movie) and the Justice League storyline was sure to entertain serious and casual DC superhero fans alike. There were also some sneaky Marvel references (Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, etc.).

It's also a great movie for animal lovers of all ages. Here the relationship between different pets and their owners is well studied. Dog owners can especially relate to the stories of Krypto and Ace. As you would expect from a pet movie, there are plenty of emotional moments, emotional scenes of human-animal interactions that are sure to warm even the hardest of hearts. 8/10.
