Review of UNCHARTED: Troublesome Treasure Tracking

February 25 2022

Treasure hunter Victor "Sully" Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) is hot on the heels of Magellan's legendary lost pot of gold. After Sully's ex-partner Sam Drake steals Juan Sebastian ElCannon's diary, he enlists the help of bartender/petty thief Nathan Drake (Tom Holland), Sully's brother he has long despised. Sully had hoped that Sam would leave clues to the treasure with Nathan.

Her adventures bring her into contact with villains, including Salvador Moncada (Antonio Banderas), a direct descendant of the family who funded Magellan's expedition, and ruthless mercenary Joe Braddock (Tate Gabriel). Together with Sully Chloe (Sofia Ali), the three warring treasure hunters follow clues in an old church in Barcelona that lead them to a map indicating gold in the Philippines.

The film begins with Nathan in imminent danger in mid-air, his legs strapped with straps attached to boxes dangling from an airplane. This opening scene alone tells us that the adventures here are over and CGI driven. It feels like a video game on the big screen. After all, it's a PlayStation movie adventure, with "Unmade" being one of PlayStation's most successful series.

The basic formula is pretty much the same as Netflix's latest heist movie Red Notice - three mutually distrustful treasure hunters, two wise men and a donkey woman follow clues in different countries to find a big treasure. Tom Holland (still ahead of Spider-Man: No Way Home) and Mark Wahlberg took over for Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson, but Sophia Ali wasn't Gal Gadot.

The study of the "Da Vinci Code" genre in the Basilica of Santa Maria del Pi included words that should not be analyzed much. The best spectacle was the large climactic scene with two helicopters, each with an old galleon hanging from the base, flying over rocky islands at sea while the human figures chased and battled each other. - Like a video game. 6/10
