Review of SING 2: Bono's Blessing

February 27, 2022

Koala Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey) gathers his old gang to put on a show in Redwood City. Among them are Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), Piglet Rosita, Gorilla Johnny (Taron Egerton). Mina the Elephant (Tori Kelly) and Ash the Porcupine (Scarlett Johansson) and more. Buster promises Wolf producer Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale) a show with Leo rock musician Clay Callaway (Bono).

When Ash goes with Buster to get Clay to join his show, the others meet new friends who help them put on the show. . Nushi (Leticia Wright) was the trotter who helped Johnny learn his dance moves. Alfonso (Pharrel Williams) was an elephant ice cream vendor who was the inspiration for the role. Portia (Halsey) was Jimmy Crystal's spoiled daughter who needed a change of perspective.

After presenting these lovable anthropomorphic animals in a singing competition organized by Buster Moon after the first film, Singing (2016), it was great enough to save the old theater from closing. Music is an integral part of the party with songs by modern hit makers such as Billie Eilish, The Wind, Ariana Grande and Shawn Mendes. Also veterans like Prince, Elton John, Steve Winwood and U2 in the mix.

The plot touches on a number of serious entertainment issues, such as nepotism (Crystal wants her daughter Portie to play the lead role), equal pay for everyone regardless of gender (Johansson's character, no less) and forcing it not to happen to suit you (and Rosita's high jump, the main character's kiss for the role ). The previous film's message about following your dreams is still very strong.

The story was too difficult for young children and too long for adults (about two hours!) However, the animation of the musical numbers was very colorful and beautiful. The songs have done a great job entertaining the audience of all ages. The grand finale of Buster Moon's production was, as expected, moving with Bono's rich and soulful voice. 7/10
