Review of NIGHTMARE ALLEY: Growing a Geek

March 2022

After dumping the bodies in the basement and setting the house on fire, Stanton Carlyle (Bradley Cooper) attends a traveling carnival where "The Geek" (a wild man who eats live chicken) and others with special "talents" perform. He learns the skill of "head reading" from husband-and-wife team Pete (David Straithairn) and Zeena (Toni Collette). He then falls in love with the beautiful "electric" girl Molly (Rooney Mara).

Stan and Molly leave the circus and go to the big city. They develop more sophisticated versions of the thoughts and perform them in luxury hotels for wealthy audiences. Stan Dr. in one of his shows. Lilith Ritter (Cate Blanchett) is a therapist for various millionaires who carry various forms of guilt. The two resort to more sophisticated and sinister scams to fleece these vulnerable victims out of their fortunes.

The cast is impressive, with 8 Oscar winners and nominees (Cooper, Blanchett, Straithairn, Collette, Mara, Mary Steenburgen, Richard Jenkins and Willem Dafoe). Here, Bradley Cooper proves his versatility as an actor. His fascinating Stanton Carlyle character moves through an arc to reach this heartwarming ending, and Cooper doesn't miss a beat in his character.

Visionary director Guillermo del Toro adapted his screenplay from William Lindsay Gresham's novel. Filmed in 1947 with Tyrone Power directed by Edmund Goulding. This would explain the somewhat dated and melodramatic twist of the story, which is told slowly and lasts for 2.5 hours. That said, for those who haven't seen the original, this ending still makes a very powerful statement.

Aside from the stellar cast, it's all the technical aspects of the cinematography that really set it apart from other films of the year. The two different parts of Stan's life make this film a big challenge in terms of production design, costumes and make-up, and these artists certainly succeed in bringing us back to the brutal death of Mardi Gras and the elegant elegance of high society. 7/10
