Review of THE BATMAN: Grit and Grime in Gotham

March 3, 2022

It's been two years since billionaire Bruce Wayne embarked on a crime-fighting mission in Gotham City. Beginning on Halloween, a mysterious man calling himself the Riddler begins a series of murders of Gotham's mayor, police commissioner, and district attorney, all with videos sent to the news and postcards addressed to Batman. His next goal was to become Bruce Wayne himself.

Batman is the DC superhero with the highest number of releases. The character was played by Lewis Wilson (1943), Robert Leary (1949), Adam West (1966), Michael Keaton (1998, 1992), Val Kilmer (1995), George Clooney (1997), Christian Bale (2005, 2008) . ) , 2012) and Ben Affleck (2016, 2017/2021) and Kevin Conroy (1993) and Will Arnett (2017) in animated films. Now comes a new incarnation.

Robert Pattinson is not the actor most associated with the Batman character. The wonderful vampire Edward Cullen became a superstar in the movie "Twilight Saga". Since then, he has slowly gained credibility as an actor in several independent films, the most recent of which is "The Lighthouse" (Robert Eggers, 2019). He returned to commercial films with "Tenet" (Christopher Nolan, 2020) and now it is.

Pattinson's face and hairstyle don't match what we see of Bruce Wayne as a millionaire actor and business tycoon. The film does not delve into Bruce's life as he is more concerned with fighting crime than Wayne Enterprises. However, Pattinson looks great behind the iconic Batman mask, with all of his eyelids covered in eyeshadow to add to the mystery.

This young Batman prefers to ride his motorcycle. The "Batmobile" is an exciting and explosive car chase between Batman and Penguin after an hour of racing against oncoming traffic on a busy highway full of 18 wheeler trailers. William Hoy and Tyler Nelson's editing deserves recognition for that incredible sequence alone.

Paul Dano's Riddler is not like the comics we know before, Frank Gorshin in the Adam West series and Jim Carrey in Val Kilmer's version. In this terrifying and deadly Riddler mystery, written on ghost greeting cards, there are sinister answers that hint at something worse. In one particular clue, written in Spanish, the Riddler searches for a "winged mouse," leaving Batman puzzled by its various meanings.

Zoe Kravitz is beautiful as Selina Kyle and a beautiful warrior as Catwoman. His presence was a welcome breath of fresh air amidst the filth and madness of Gotham. His intimate scenes with Batman are filled with kinetic romantic chemistry. His involvement in the story of his friend's kidnapping by gangsters seems superficial at first, but later becomes very important in uncovering the main villain.

Colin Farrell's greasy hair and facial implants are unrecognizable, so Penguin doesn't look like the Burgess Meredith or Danny DeVito versions. Wayne's loyal servant Alfred Pennyworth is played by Andy Serkis (without CGI). Lt. James Gordon (former commissioner) is played by Jeffrey Wright. Wimpy District Attorney Gil Coulson is played by Peter Sarsgaard. Ruthless gangster Carmine Falcone is played by John Turturro.

After 5 years, Matt Reeves returns as director and screenwriter for his two films "Planet of the Apes" in 2014 and 2017. This complex multi-character story is captured by captivating creative visuals shot with Greg's superb photography. Fraser, screenplay by James Chinlund and soundtrack by Michael Giacchino. 3 hours seems like a long time, but every minute is worth it. 10/10
