Review of MOTHERLY: Doting on Daughters

June 1, 2022

Kate (Laura Burke) tries to please her daughter Beth (Tessa Kosma) for her ninth year. However, Beth is worried and misses her father, Brad, who was imprisoned for the brutal murder of a neighbor's daughter. It was Kate who turned him in to the police.

That night, intruders break into the house and take Kate and Beth hostage. The dead girl's parents were Mary and Louis (Kristen McCulloch and Nick Smith) . They seek revenge on Kate, who they believe is responsible for the crime.

Right from the start, you know it's going to be a tense film. The opening scene shows a girl on a couch in a living room with a birthday cake in front of her while her mother holds a scary looking knife. From the first scene alone, we get a sense of the unusual mother-daughter relationship that is explored in the rest of the film.

All the characters, especially Kate and Beth, were flawless and likeable, so you never knew who to trust. There were two families separated by tragic events, and all this was done by the love of two mothers for their daughters. Most of the scenes take place in an empty, claustrophobic house and barn. The only time the camera leaves the house is when Hal (Colin Paradin) follows the police in his car to protect witnesses.

A constant dread hangs over every scene and character. Director Craig David Wallace kept the scene simple and intense, mostly with two characters on screen, with lighting, sound effects and an ominous musical score to keep the tension going. He can keep guessing and guessing as new stories emerge in each level . 7/10
