Review of LICORICE PIZZA: Matching Maturity
March 2022
Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) was a confident and confident 15-year-old actor who was mature for his age. Alana Kane (Alana Chaim) was a 25-year-old photographer's assistant, and held the same position for the next five years. It was Gary's high school picture day and he saw the beautiful Alana at work and was impressed. The two hit it off and became friends, but Alana made it clear she wasn't his girlfriend.
Alana joined Gary on their press trip to New York with actress Lucy Doolittle (Christine Ebersole). She helped him with his waterbed business and drove the truck when he gave the bed to Jon Peters (Bradley Cooper). Alana tried her luck as an actress and was close to a film with Jack Holden (Sean Penn); and volunteered for the political campaign of mayoral candidate Joel Wax (Bernie Safdie).
Writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson wrote the role of Alana specifically for Alana Kane, for whom he directed music videos. Although it was his first feature film, Kane was a very natural actor, not at all shy. Despite being the eldest of the pair, Alana was the more mature one than Gary. His sisters and parents played his family in the movie and they were quite good, especially his father.
Cooper Hoffman, 18, is the son of the late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman. That pedigree shaped this very natural actor, who showed no fear or hesitation in a challenging role in his film debut. Gary was a more mature boy than his biological age, both physically and mentally (apparently). Despite looking and acting older than Alana, Hoffman managed to retain some of his childhood in Gary.
Anderson captured that vibrant 1970s vibe in his footage, following Gary in all of his business ideas. There were so many funny lines in his script, between Gary and Alana of course, but Bradley Cooper stole the show with his long cameo as the smarmy gentleman. He was really charming and nice. But at the center of it all was an awkward romance that blossomed between a 25-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy. I can't justify it. 6/10
