It was August 15, 1969, and 9-year-old Buddy (Judd Hill) was playing in the neighborhood streets. Suddenly, a group of Protestant extremists created a violent rebellion, especially in the homes of Catholics who had nothing to do with them. Buddy's Protestant family lives in harmony with their Catholic neighbors, but local leader Billy Clanton (Colin Morgan) pressures Buddy's father (Jamie Dornan) to join his cause or whatever.
Buddy Pan had to work from Belfast, London to pay off his huge debts and spent most of the week away. So Buddy's mother (Caitriona Balfe) has to take care of Buddy and his older brother Wills (Lewis McCasney). He lives with his paternal grandparents Pop (Cieran Hinds) and his grandmother (Judi Dench). Unsettled peace and order forces Buddy Pa to bring his family from Belfast to live with him in London.
Buddy is still in school, doing his best to get good grades so that he can sit next to his great love, Catherine (a tenant in olive trees). He meets his older cousin Moira (Lara McDonnell), which gets him into trouble. He loved watching movies with his family, in the theater or on TV. Buddy spent a lot of time with his grandparents, especially their parents helping him with his math homework and giving him advice about girls.
This is Judd Hill's first feature film in which he stars, but you'd never suspect he's a newcomer. He was such a natural actor and he gave this intelligent yet sassy and mischievous performance that was fresh and engaging with no strings attached. Balfe, Dornan, Dench and especially Hinds (we all wish we were like Pop) gave their love characters different expressions as the boy remembered them.
This film was a very visceral and visceral experience. Aside from the irresistible beat of all the Irish accents, the soundtrack was the highlight of this movie. Along with songs by Belfast's Van Morrison, there were songs from films such as Camelot, Hi Noon and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Jamie Dornan's version of "Eternal Love" was particularly effective.
Kenneth Branagh wrote this script based on the true events of his life growing up in Belfast, and you can clearly see how small Buddy Kenneth was as a child. He shot his passion project in color with contemporary Belfast scenes, then switched to black and white for the rest of the film as he recounted the events of 1969. 9/10
