Netflix: Review of THE WEEKEND AWAY: Crime in Captivating Croatia

March 8, 2022

Beth (Leighton Meester) is in Croatia for the weekend with her good friend Kate (Kristina Wolf). Kate took Beth to a nightclub where they hung out with guys and had drinks. The next day, Beth woke up in complete disarray to find that Kate was missing. Beth calls Zein (Ziad Bakri), the taxi driver who picked her up from the airport the day before, to help her find a friend.

Although Beth and Kate were best friends, they were completely different personalities. Beth was more quiet and reserved, while Kate was the attention-seeking guest. Beth was a mother who had just given birth to a baby girl. However, she and her husband Rob (Luke Norris) were going through hard times in their marriage, so she decided to accept this invitation from Kate, who has divorced her husband Jay (Tucker's part).

The first part, where the mystery of Kate's disappearance was revealed, was quite formal. However, from that point on, the story goes from one turn to the next and is intervened and suspected by other people, including Beth herself. Everyone, including the lovely Zane or police detective Pavich (Amar Bukvich) , will be very suspicious, so you won't know who to trust, which was fun.

Australian director Kim Farrant managed to create a lot of suspense and deliberate confusion from Sarah Alderson's script, which mixes family melodrama with Syrian refugees and an evil Airbnb. There may have been a few moments, but with Farrant's fast yet compelling pace of cinematic storytelling, there was no time to think about plot holes as you just jumped from one plausible solution to the next.

The best part of this film was the picturesque places in Croatia. We filmed mainly in Split (we see the Diocletian's Palace and the statue of Gregory of Nin), there were also scenes in Dubrovnik (Game of Thrones will definitely return to King's Landing) and Zagreb (Croatia's capital). . Even if the date doesn't quite show the tourist side of Croatia, you'll want to visit it. 6/10.
