Netflix: Review of TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (2022): More Murderous Mayhem

February 23, 2022

A group of wealthy millennials led by entrepreneurs Melody (Sarah Yearkin) and Dante (Jacob Lattimore) have acquired the rights to turn Harlow, Texas into a fashion hub. One day they visit the site and prepare it to present it to their investors. Melody was accompanied by her younger sister Lila (Elsie Fisher), who was still recovering from her own traumatic experience.

They had a heated argument with old Ginny, who still had the papers from the old orphanage where she and her "son" lived. He lost consciousness and had to be taken to hospital, but died en route. His "son" goes crazy and kills everyone in the police car. Then he cut the skin off his mother's face and put it on as a mask. He returned to his home in Harlow, intent on killing anyone who accused him of his mother's death.

Not being a fan of slasher movies, I've never seen any of the previous Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies, neither the original nor its reboots and sequels. Tobe Hooper's 1974 debut film is considered a horror film. in 1983 (also by Hooper), followed by sequels in 1990 and 1996. It was restarted in 1983 and 2013 (presented in 3D). There were prequels in 2006 ("TTCM: The Beginning") and 2017 ("Leatherface").

It was the sequel to a film that originally started in 1974 with a television news bulletin summarizing the events. This new one continues the usual gory formula where every character is ready for a chase and an incredibly gruesome killing spree. The most memorable scene that sets him apart has to be the hipster massacre on a party bus with blue lights. One of the survivors even returns to take revenge.

The confrontation between Leatherface and the two sisters (not really a spoiler) was a really well done suspense scene, as long as you can put a stop to the disbelief. However, the ending was a real headache. Just when you thought our heroes had successfully escaped all the damn villains, we were given a push to send them back and prepare for another sequel. 5/10
