Stanley Sugarman (Adam Sandler) has been a talent scout for the Philadelphia 76ers for many years. He always neglects his wife Teresa (Queen Latifah) and daughter Alex (Jordan Hull) in pursuit of promising basketball players. His brief stint as an assistant coach is cut short when new 76ers owner Vince Merrick (Ben Foster) sends him to scout.
In Spain, Stanley watches a game on a nearby field and is impressed by the talent of a tall, doe-eyed young player named Bo Cruz (Juancho Hernangomez), a poor construction worker. Stanley convinces Bowen to leave behind his mother Paola (Maria Botto) and young daughter Lucia (Ainoa Pilet) to come to the United States for a guaranteed shot at the NBA. However, Stanley Bo's grand plans don't go as well as they'd like.
It was a sports drama, so it pretty much followed the formula of previous sports drama movies. Success was out of reach for the talented but troubled player who faced many obstacles. Then comes a dedicated mentor to guide him to victory. You can see the third act in action from the beginning, as well as a practical montage. In this case, however, the counselor had to overcome past and present problems.
After his recent critical acclaim for Uncut Gems (2019), Adam Sandler is back with another amazing role that will make you stop and watch. It wasn't as dark as "Uncut" so it managed to bring out the popular male humor. While basketball was in the uncut background, basketball was the center of attention here. You can feel Sandler's passion for basketball here, you can't fake it.
After all, most of the actors were NBA players. Bo Cruz plays forward Juancho Hernangomez, currently with the Utah Jazz, in a promising debut. Minnesota Timberwolves shooting guard Anthony Edwards plays nemesis Kermit Wilts, a rumor that upsets Bo. Former NBA point guard Kenny Smith plays Stanley's sports agent and friend Leon Rich.
In addition, there were numerous guest appearances by former and current NBA stars led by Dr. J himself, Julius Erving. Check out real 76ers like Coach Doc Rivers, Tobias Harris and Tyrese Maxey, Boban Marjanovic (in hilarious opening scene), Dirk Nowitzki, Charles Barkley, Shaquille O'Neal, Allen Iverson, Kyle Lowry, Jordan Clarkson etc. To Philadelphia's Rocky Balboa, the film became the turning point of this subgenre. 8/10
