Famous Miami architect Billy Herrera (Andy Garcia) and his wife Ingrid (Gloria Estefan) have two daughters. They are Sofia (Adria Arjona), now a lawyer who has started her practice in New York, and Cora (Isabella Merced), who wants to start her own fashion business instead of going to college. However, her marriage has been troubled over the past year, and marriage counseling has failed, and Ingrid, fed up, asks for a divorce.
They plan to tell their daughter when Sofia returns to Miami for a visit. However, Sofia announces that she is engaged to a young lawyer, Adan Castillo (Diego Boneta), and beats them up by saying that she plans to get married a month before opening her law office in Mexico. Billy, shaken by the turmoil, had a hard time accepting how the couple wanted to end their marriage.
The story of a father who struggles to accept that his daughter is getting married has been adapted into two previous films. The first film (nominated for Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Screenplay) was released in 1950, starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor as his daughters. Then there was the 1991 remake of the much-loved comedy starring Steve Martin as the father and Kimberly Williams as his daughter.
This Latino remake is more serious than many (especially fans of the 1991 comedy) might think, with a sad Andy Garcia (who plays Al Pacino's godfather) as a grieving father. Sofia and Adan's desperation to avoid a traditional church wedding and lavish reception is multiplied when Adan's wealthy father, Hernán (Pedro Damian), steals the show.
It's nice to see Gloria Estefan again, although it's a shame not to hear her sing. It's a shame that SNL comedian Chloe Fineman's wedding planner, Natalie Vance, isn't quite as memorable as Martin Short's Frank Egelhofer. This new version is of course not completely necessary, but daughter marriages will be a source of anxiety, drama, and eternal conflict for all parents for generations to come. 6/10.
