CINEMALAYA 2022: OPENING FILM: Review of LEONOR WILL NEVER DIE: Cinematic Catharsis
August 6, 2022
Leonor Reyes (Sheila Francisco) wrote action screenplays in her prime. Now she is retired, separated from her husband Valentin (Alan Bautista), who used to work as a local politician. She now lives with her son Rudy (Bong Cabrera), who plans to work abroad while helping his father's campaign. His second son Ronaldo (Anthony Falcone) died tragically while visiting his family as a ghost when he was young.
When Leonor saw a script contest in the newspaper, she started working on one of her old unfinished scripts, "Ang Pagbabalik ng Quago." It was about a brave hero named Ronaldo (Rocky Salamedis) who rescues a troubled daughter Isabella (Ria Molina) from her gangster boyfriend Ricardo (Ryan Eigenmann). One day, as a result of an accident, Leonora falls into a coma, and she begins to see herself in the film she is writing.
Despite the slightly disappointing synopsis, this film directed by Martika Ramirez Escobar (her first film) was a very fun and entertaining Filipino film. From the beginning of the melodrama, the opening credits turned into a movie within a movie, and this is where the fun began. We knew that at some point the parallel content would cross over, but when that bad moment came, it was completely out of the ordinary (even).
This movie is sure to appeal to Filipino theater lovers. Starring Sheila Francisco is a veteran triple threat, now best known as Tia Deli in the popular musical film Ang Huling El Bimbo (2019). Beautiful and motherly, Leonor is easy to pity as she soaks in her twin hair. Leonor is on her own, charting her own path as creatively as writing her own script, and we're rooting for her.
The actors who played the sons of Leonor Bongo Cabrera and Anthony Falcone are also stage actors (notably in some of the Virgin Labfest productions) in addition to being freelance film actors. Rudy de Cabrera can be annoying at first, but in the end he proves how much he cares for his mother. Theater actresses Madeleine Nicholas (as producer Chinoy), Roslyn Perez (on-screen mother) and Tammy Monceau (the scene-stealing doctor) are also amazing.
Ronvaldo, the star model actor of the film, has gone missing. This movie evokes a lot of nostalgia for the old genre of Philippine cinema - the action movie. Salumbid did all the classic superhero tricks - overhead fights, quick shots, even leading lady passes. Meanwhile, Ryan Eigenmann and Dido de la Paz used all the usual punk tricks or torture on him.
This film was screened in the 2022 Sundance Film Festival World Drama Competition and even won the Special Jury Prize for Creative Spirit. Benoit's sense of humor was based on Fernando Poe Jr.'s unique pop culture action movies, so it was a nice surprise that guests might not have had any context for. Fortunately, they did, proving that Filipino humor has international appeal. 8/10.
