Lawyer Bobby Chan runs a non-governmental organization in Palawan province called Palawan NGO Network Inc. (PNNI). This is a group of people who volunteered to become sky divers to save Palawan's environment. Their efforts are supported by some mayors like Nieves Rosento of El Nido. As paratroopers, they can't arrest people, but they can confiscate equipment. In fact, they already have an entire museum of confiscated chainsaws.
As altruistic as the efforts of Atti. Chan and the Mayor of Rosenth may face a very powerful enemy. They have been repeatedly threatened. There were indications that they were involved in illegal drugs. Successful attempts have been made to disrupt their current position. There have been actual murders of his loyalists, such as Villa Libertad's Cap Ruben Arzaga, who was shot dead while investigating a report on illegal logging.
One paratrooper in the spotlight was Tata Baladaras, who spoke of his surprise as a young soldier when he was forced to cut trees in Palawan forests in the name of "progress". Since then, he has dedicated his life to protecting the environment so that his grandchildren can see and enjoy the lush rainforest he knew and loved. However, he and his men were very scared when faced with constant danger.
Carl Malakounas, an Australian journalist with Agence-France Presse, wrote and directed the documentary . He did not hesitate to call out politicians who put their lives at risk for the valiant efforts of these fearless paramilitaries. Photographer Tom Bannigan captures the natural beauty of Palawan that has made it famous, as well as the hard lives of the brave people who fight to hold on to it.
Malakounas' passion began in 2011, when he was supposed to do a report on ecotourism, but his contact was shot dead. This led him to dig deep and document the violence against environmental activists on this island paradise. As the ominous title promises, the movie's escalating tension will leave viewers unsettled with palpable danger as they watch this candid and madcap documentary.
Delicado is co-produced by Marty Ciucco and Michael Collins (the team behind the 1997 release The Cheong Sisters' Murder Surrender) and Karl Malakounas with Cara Magsanak-Alikpala.
