Private Wesley Villanueva (Gio Jahul) fights terrorists in a bloody battle in Marawi that leaves many dead. First he calls his girlfriend, the receptionist at the Ritz (Kate Alejandrino). They then board a bus to Calamba for a surprise visit to their parents (Solomon Cruz and Charmaine Centra-Buencamino) who are awaiting their arrival next week.
Since the next day was a city break, Wesley and Ritz went to many games and carnivals. However, while trying to get a large Ritz teddy bear on the shooting range, Wesley suddenly has flashbacks from a violent encounter in Marawi and suddenly becomes angry, thinking that everyone around him is laughing at him. Other memories await him in the days to come.
The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) first addressed post-traumatic stress disorder (or PTSD) in soldiers returning home from the battlefield, which was later addressed in The Deer Hunter (1978). ) "Wounded Shelf" (2008). It is also a well-known theme in many Filipino films. Recently, Cinemalaya 2019 presented Gatilyo, a short film about a soldier who survives an ambush and his difficult transition to civilian life.
Gio Gahol and Keith Alejandrino provided exceptionally restrained, precise and reliable threads. Izzy Ferrer made a powerful impression in her singles scene as Tita Chuna, the anti-yellow Facebook fake news advocate. The audience erupted in applause as Wesley responded to the soldier's announcement of his salary. The new actor with the unique name AIR, who plays Jerry, Wesley's wounded soldier friend, has made dramatic promises.
"Bula sa Langit" also talks about PTSD in soldiers, but in a different narrative style from writer Andrean Legaspi and director Shinley Jenner. The tough moral challenges faced by Soldiers in the field, the harm done in the line of duty, Soldiers' reasons for being Soldiers, the irony of family members' pride and fear, and patriotism compared to the ever-present appeal of foreign service. Service - everything was touched on in the film.
Jenner often alternates actual scenes with Marawi scenes to give us an idea of what Wesley has in mind. He drew Wong Kar Wai in a scene reminiscent of Fallen Angels (1995) where Ritz rests his head on Wesley's back while riding a motorcycle. Just when you think you know how this movie is going to end, Jenner gives us an unusual ending that will have viewers thinking and talking while turning their heads. 7/10
