Amazon Prime: Review of THIRTEEN LIVES: Diving Delivery

August 15, 2022

On June 23, 2018, twelve boys from Chiang Rai Junior Soccer Team and their assistant coach decided to visit Tham Luang Cave after practice. While they were inside, it began to rain heavily outside, causing the cave to flood. That night, when the kids miss their birthday, they discover their parents are trapped in a flooded cave. A rescue operation was organized immediately.

Due to the difficulty of accessing the caves, the local authorities decide to seek help from the British Cave Rescue Council, who send experienced cave divers Richard Stanton (Viga Mortensen) and John Volanta (Colin Farrell). After waiting for the rain to stop and the water to fill up, we were finally allowed to enter the cave on the 10th day. The children were found alive 4 km from the cave. How to remove them safely?

The story of the boys trapped in the cave for three weeks is a real-life rescue drama that made daily news in the summer of 2018, so the outcome was familiar to those watching the proceedings at the time. It was a challenge for director Ron Howard – how do you make an adventure film with an ending that almost everyone knows?

When you start streaming the movie, you will see that it is 2.5 hours long. Surprisingly, Howard sets up the entire storyline in the first 10 minutes and leaves the rest of the film to the efforts of everyone involved in the rescue operation. Since this is an international rescue operation, the safety of the rescuers is increased. This causes long delays, great frustration for the enemy and stress in the family.

It might sound like a white savior movie, with an eclectic group of white divers first helping the boys and Dr. Richard comes up with a dangerous new way to save Harris (Joel Edgerton). However, Howard made sure we saw the culture and courage of the Thai people. A Thai Navy soldier was killed during the mission. Extracting water from the cave, which was the brainchild of an engineer in Bangkok, made huge sacrifices for nearby farms and crops.

Howard takes us through each of his treacherous long dives with stunning underwater cinematography, dangerous and tense editing, a haunting musical score and stunning sound effects. As you might expect, Howard's sense of claustrophobia can be overwhelming. Watching this harrowing story from the comfort of your own home highlights the courage of everyone involved in the terrifying rescue. 8/10.
