CINEMALAYA 2022: Review of THE BASEBALL PLAYER: Denied Dreams

August 16, 2022

After his family is killed by soldiers, Fajad (Don Melvin Bangling) takes little Khalid (J.M. Batista) to his parents' family in a nearby town. Almera (Tess Antonio) and her teenage son Amir (Tommy Alejandino) bring Khaled to their house. Amir takes Khalid to his school. In elementary school, Khalid was quiet and reserved, but was not afraid to defend himself against bullies.

Because of his baseball skills, his teacher Sir Jonas (Pongs Leonardo) encourages Amir to try his hand at Kudarat Sultan University, which is what Amir wants to do with his life. However, Amir is recruited by his uncle Nhor (Euel Saracho) to receive combat training with the group. As the Philippine military continued to intensify the fight against the Moro independence movement, soldiers soon arrived in their village.

Anyone expecting this movie to be a sports drama based on a seemingly simple title might be disappointed. There has not yet been a single baseball game in which the main character would play a key role in the victory of the team. It wasn't a baseball movie for kids like Rocky of the Year or Little Big League. Baseball was a dream here, but it was banned due to the harsh neighborhood where Amir lived.

Both children who were co-hosts received praise for their performances. Tommy Alejandino plays Amir as Khalid's loving older brother despite losing his own father in the war. The character is torn between what he wants and what he does, with Alejandrino in control of his emotions. The young J. M. Bautista matched his mature counterparts. When she cries, Khalid, we cry together.

Written and directed by Carlo Obispo tells the touching story of Muslim children growing up in the shadow of a brutal civil war. The scene where the children's screams are interspersed with gunshots was so powerful that I wished there were no credits at that moment. With Best Picture and other awards in mind, it's best not to expect too much, lest you change your mind and miss the point. His simple yet powerful storytelling really has a heartbeat. 8/10
