Review of THE MATRIX RESURRECTIONS: Neo's Nostalgia

January 17, 2022

Lead game developer Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) created a wildly popular video game called The Matrix based on dark memories of his past as Neo. When he stops taking the blue pills his therapist (Neil Patrick Harris) gives him, even when he meets a woman in a cafe he calls Tiffany (Carrie Ann Moss), he thinks the dream is real. From Tamasha to Semukh. .

Anderson's conversations with Bugs (Jessica Henwick) and a new woman named Morpheus (Yahia Abdul Mateen II) bring him back to the new Matrix as Neo, visiting human settlements that have survived the Machine War and joined the Trinity. Agent Smith (Jonathan Groff) tries to dissuade Neo from his plan to rescue him. Eventually, Neo will face the great master known as the Analyst.

Released in 1999, The Matrix by the Wachowskis (then brothers Larry and Andy, now brothers Lana and Lily in 2010) is one of the most influential sci-fi adventure films of all time, boasting groundbreaking digital visual effects and known for his actions. Choreography. Self-defense (we still see the bullet time effect). It spawned two sequels to the video games and comics, Reloaded and Revolutions (both released in 2003).

Knowing the first three films will go a long way in appreciating this new meta-sequel, only if Lana Wachowski goes it alone this time. The story takes place 60 years after the events of the last Matrix film, with detailed references to the original trilogy that will delight loyal fans. Reeves and Mossa are joined by Jada Pinkett-Smith as Niobe and Lambert Wilson as the Merovingian. Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving are conspicuously absent.

It should work really well, as it's mostly fan service and nostalgia, using old movie clips to please Matrix fans, even reliving key moments. However, at 2 hours and 28 minutes, it can feel quite bloated, especially with the slow first two acts, with plenty of exposition to help the audience understand its position. However, the pace and action definitely picked up from Act 3 and ended with a grand flourish. 7/10
