Netflix: Review of THE SILENT SEA: Marooned on the Moon

January 3, 2021

Korea's air and space forces have sent a mission to revisit the ill-fated Balhae lunar research station on the moon, five years after its entire crew was killed in a major radiation accident. The team led by Captain Han Yunzhe (Gong Yu) consisted of engineers, a doctor, and a doctor. Song Ji-an (Bae Dong, astrobiologist). Your mission was to retrieve a container containing a secret research sample. whose exact nature was kept secret.

Already on the way to the moon, a serious failure occurred, which caused an emergency landing on the moon. Then, when all communications were cut off, they had to walk several kilometers to Balkhai, as their oxygen supply quickly ran out. From day one, there were crew casualties due to a mysterious creature wandering the station, or a mysterious illness that caused the victim to vomit large amounts of pure water. .

The first four episodes established the immediate situation of the global water crisis, the problem that this lunar mission was meant to solve. Director Choi Han-yeon's approach leaves the audience in the dark about the true nature of Balhae's tragedy and what this mysterious champion has had to recover from. At the same time, the audience will feel the longing, despair, and fear of the unknown felt by the members of the film crew.

This first half of the series was very believable in terms of its interesting premise. In fact, the most impressive aspect was the production design of the spacecraft, space station, and spacecraft. This is arguably the most complex and realistic sci-fi I've ever seen in a South Korean production. While some laws of physics and biology were violated in the thrill-seeking run, the look and feel were top notch.

Already in the second part of the film, they encountered an intruder. The crew needed to get to know this invader better and understand how to deal with its threat or its value to them. At this point, when the suspense thriller aspect wore off, the drama Dr. Song remembered his sister who died in the Balkhai disaster. The internal conflict between the members of the team added extra action to the last episode.

Gun Yu was instrumental as their alpha male leader, Captain Han. He seemed cold at first, but it wasn't too hard to show your heart sooner or later. Be Dong was a doctor. The song played a more subdued role, but "Kingdom" managed to make things believable. Kim Sun-young took a while to get used to her role as a doctor after being seen as the gossipy aunt in Crashing on You and When the Camellias Bloom.

I couldn't help but think that the eight episodes could be reduced to four or just one movie. At first there were many crew members so they had to die one by one until they finally survived. This resulted in boilerplate scripts that could be further modified if desired. It was a happy ending, because very important issues were left up in the air. 7/10
