Netflix: Review of THE LOST DAUGHTER: Obsessive Observation

December 31, 2021

English professor Leda Caruso (Olivia Coleman) is going on summer vacation. On the beach, he becomes obsessed with an attractive young woman, Nina (Dakota Johnson), and his wayward young daughter, Elena (Athena Martin). He recalls raising his two daughters, Bianca and Martha (Robin Elwell and Ellie Blake), when he was in his twenties (Jesse Buckley).

At first glance, 48-year-old Leda di Colman looks like a polite scientist. However, the film gradually reveals that he has taken a heavy psychological toll over the years. This painful subject mainly revolves around his difficult relationship with his daughter when they were young, when he saw the seductive Nina and his Elena come back to life. Even more disturbing details will become known when Elena's doll disappears.

It is interesting to watch how Leda sequentially shows two years of Coleman and Buckley's life. Leda Coleman exhibits experimental behavior that does not seem to fit the usual profile of a respectable woman of her age and build. It wasn't until we met a young Leda Buckley through a flashback that we understood Leda Coleman's downfall after meeting Nina as they saw that they shared the same dilemma with their daughter and son.

True to her provocative Greek mythological name, Leda is a hot woman. While Buckley's young husband Joe (Jack Farthing) is also drawn to the intellectual mind and masculine convictions of his colleague Professor Hardy (Peter Skarsgård). While on vacation, middle-aged Leda Coleman still manages to attract many male suitors, including senior head of house Lyle (Ed Harris) and young working-class student Will (Paul Mescal).

Maggie Gyllenhaal's directorial and screenwriting debut, based on the novel by Italian author Elena Ferrante, has an all-female creative team behind it. Gyllenhaal approaches the drama with palpable excitement, reflected in Helen Louver's gorgeous imagery. Coleman, Buckley and Johnson They all give wonderful complex internal interpretations of their flawed nature. 7/10
