Apple TV+: Review of THE TRAGEDY OF MACBETH: Starkly Stylized Shakespeare

January 16, 2022

I first saw the full version of Shakespeare's Macbeth in Justin Kurzel's 2015 film adaptation starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard. Since then, I have been able to see several theatrical versions of the show. So now I'm familiar with the story and the characters, which is helpful when I watch this new film adaptation, also set in Shakespearean prose and verse.

Macbeth was a Scottish nobleman who fought for King Duncan. After winning a bloody battle, Macbeth and his compatriot Banquo meet three wizards who tell them of their future. Macbeth became King of Scotland, and Banquo became the father of a succession of kings. When his wife, Lady Macbeth, learns of the prophecy, she asks her husband to kill Duncan to fulfill it. However, after committing this act, Macbeth's mind was shattered by his greed and guilt.

As the story was expected to be familiar to audiences, director Joel Coen (this time flying solo instead of with his younger brother and managing partner Ethan) decided to focus more on the cinematography to differentiate his version from all previous film versions. . Before him, masters like Orson Welles (1948), Roman Polanski (1971) and Akira Kurosawa (Japanese adaptation as Throne of Blood, 1957).

In glossy black and white with a 1.19:1 aspect ratio , Cohen uses whimsical imagery with various creative shots and angles overseen by cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel. Cohen's peculiar decision fits into this chilling tale of greed and madness, a novel to watch and read with interest. One of the key decisions Coen made was casting a single actress, Kathryn Hunter, as the twisted version of the three iconic witches.

In his 60s, Denzel Washington is somber and gray here, as is Frances McDormand, who is much older than Macbeth and the other cinematic Lady Macbeth. In addition to highlighting the ranks of these two Oscar-winning actors, their advanced age lends urgency to the story that drives these two aging characters to desperately pursue their ambitions while they still can: kill or curse.

In addition to Washington as Macbeth, the main character Macduff, whom the witches warn Macbeth about, is also played by black actor Corey Hawkins. This was a wise casting decision as they decided to diversify the character's race. But overall, while visually stunning, the harshness of the gray color palette and the innocence of the landscape somehow make the entire film feel cold and emotionally distant. 7/10
