Vivamax: Review of HABANGBUHAY: Interrupted by Illness

Bea (Ellis Joson) is a beautiful and special social media influencer with popular makeup vlogs. JR (McCoy de Leon) is their servant, an orphan who grew up with a grandmother and a dog. As per the formula these cinematic love stories usually follow, they start to hate each other but eventually fall in love. But, as fate would have it, serious health conditions will make this relationship very demanding.
The love relationship of young people complicated by the illness of one of the spouses is a popular plot in cinema. From A Love Story (1970) to Dying Young (1991), from A Walk to Remember (2002) to The Fault in Our Stars (2014), audiences mourned these ill-fated lovers who found love in one man, but understood. This love will end sadly because one of them suffers from an incurable disease.
Unlike the cancer films mentioned earlier, the disease treated in this film is CVID (common variant immunodeficiency), a rare primary immunodeficiency disease with no known cure, which makes the patient susceptible to various infectious diseases. So the film is more like Five Feet Apart (2019), about cystic fibrosis, which leaves patients vulnerable to fatal lung infections.
Ellis Joson really went to town with the role of Bea, literally covering the gamut of human emotions from overwhelming joy to extreme depression, from courage and energy to weakness and despair. As JR, McCoy de Leon understands Jose very easily and makes us believe in the sincerity of their love story. But the fact that this pair is between a pampered rich prince and a shy and illiterate servant is certainly not so easy to digest.
Giving JR mental health issues and a traumatic backstory in the second half was an interesting development, but no longer an issue in the final act. Yayo Aguila's storyline as Lily, Bea's overprotective mother, is very predictable. They try to complicate the story by breaking up and not getting along with her ex-husband Bernard (Lander Vera-Pérez), but that doesn't bring much.
For nearly two hours, director Real S. Florido took the time to tell the family story, while screenwriters John Versoza and Paolo Valconca incorporated all the usual twists and turns into their script. I love the scene where B and JR appear together when they are completely apart. Cinematographer Lee Briones-Meili did an excellent job of filming the climbing scene of Mount Tala. 6/10.
