Vivamax: Review of DECEPTION: Melodramatic Miss

January 28, 2022

Movie star Rose Alcantara (Claudine Barreto) spent 10 years in prison for burning down her house and murdering her husband, former stuntman Jericho de Jesus (Mark Anthony Fernandez). Her personal assistant Roxy (Juliana Parizkova Segovia) puts her four-year-old son Tom up for adoption without Rose's knowledge or consent.

After his release, he stays with his ex-mother, Olivia (Chanda Romero), with whom Rose previously broke up due to money problems. While searching for Tom-Tom at the Asil Milagros mental hospital, he learns that Jonathan and Grace de Juan (Mayton Eugenio) have adopted their son, now seven years old, Eric de Juan (Migs Cuaderno).

Director Joel Lomangan's new film is an old Filipino soap opera melodrama turned into a feature film. The mother went to prison, and the son was adopted. Supposed to be a person who died in a fire who later reappears in a different guise and personality. How many times have we heard about such a failed plot, and here it is again.

The story was supposed to last 10 years, but Claudine Barretto looked the same before and after entering prison. There is almost no Rosa-like subtlety in her dramatic scenes. It may be rude to point out here that his current heavy physical weight detracts from the effectiveness of his restrained but flawed performance.

Mark Anthony Fernandez's face is frozen with constant anger. Her hair and makeup look like Jonathan's wig and long hair in a man bun is really scary. He also delivered the sentence in a loud voice that sounded awkward, unintentionally making his exaggerated behavior laughable.

Is it really possible to give the child up for adoption without the consent of the mother, who is known to be alive? Would a good lawyer really tell a client that she could legally kill her husband again because she had previously served time for his murder? These and many other illogical plot holes blow the imagination when you mix with rehashed stories.

The pointless scene where Rose "rewards" the Asylum case worker (Gerald Santos) for helping her is infuriating. I wonder why Claudine Barretto allowed herself to play this embarrassing scene. Why was such a common scene included? This should have been changed without affecting the story.

It was supposed to be a great movie about the reunion of former 90s love team Claudine and Marc Anthony. However, the role did not suit them, and they had to star in scenes that were not to their liking. Director Joel Lamangan is known to make good melodramas, but unfortunately for Claudine fans, this melodrama is not one of the best. 2/10.
