Review of SCREAM (2022): Robust "Requel"

February 2, 2022

Tara Carpenter (Jenna Ortega) is home alone when she gets a call from a creepy guy who wants to take her on a horror movie quest. The ghostly face soon appeared and attacked him with a knife. Somehow she survived the attack and was hospitalized. Tara's older sister Sam (Melissa Barrera) returns home to Woodsboro to be with her. After being attacked by Ghostface himself, Sam reveals the truth about her real father to Tara, causing her family to fall apart.

It is the sequel (fifth) and remake (or "Requel" as the film's protagonist calls it) of Wes Craven's classic 90's horror film About a Woman. The face of the screaming ghost that was killing people in Woodsboro, California, from the Halloween horror series (inspired by Munch's painting The Scream). Sydney always needs the help of local police officer Davy Reilly (David Arquette) and tabloid journalist Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox).

This new film basically follows the formula of the original 1996 film. The opening scene with Tara on the phone was very similar to the unforgettable performance of Drew Barrymore from the first film as Casey Baker, who also played a man from the horror film Trivia. Games, impending attack. Casey's boyfriend is killed outside her house when she asks the wrong question. Ghostface appears and chases Casey with a knife, leading to her fate as she rips out her stomach and hangs it from a tree.

As with previous Scream movies, there's always a character who knows their dire situation is like a classic horror movie and that they must follow a list of "rules" in order to stay alive. Those who have sex, do drugs, or say "I'll be right back" will never survive. In the first film, these rules were established by Randy Meeks. In this latest series, honors go to Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmine Savoy-Brown), Randy's niece, daughter of his sister Martha (Heather Matarazzo).

Like Spider-Man and The Matrix before it, Scream (2022) gets high points for the nostalgia factor, as it brings back looks and characters (played by the same actors) from the original film. I'm not a fan, so I didn't watch it after the first film, but it was enough to appreciate directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillette's efforts to please fans of the franchise. The crazy stabbing scenes are over the top as expected, so it was even crazier to see these victims survive those stabbings. 7/10
