Review of DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA: Truths and Transitions

May 19, 2022

In 1928, Lady Violet (Maggie Smith) inherits a villa in the south of France that she bought 60 years ago from the late Marquis de Montmireuil. Sir Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) and Cora (Elizabeth McGovern), Edith (Laura Carmichael) and Bertie Pelham (Harry Haddon-Patton), Tom Branson (Alan Leech), newlyweds Lucy (Tuppence Middleton) and sister-in-law Lady Bagshaw (Imelda) . Staunton visited him at the invitation of his son Montmirrail.

Meanwhile, Downton is hired by Lady Mary Talbot (Michelle Dockery) to make a silent film directed by Jake Barber (Hugh Dancy) with popular movie stars Myrna Daglish (Laura Haddock) and Guy Dexter (Dominic West). However, filming was halted after their sponsor canceled midway because they didn't need silence. Barber then decided to go to Talkies, but it wasn't easy.

Downton Abbey fans will love watching this reunion and learning what happened to the lords and servants during the show's 6 seasons that ran from 2010 to 2015. Since 1925. In 2019, the cinema hosted a first viewing of King George V and Queen Mary's visit to Downton in 1927.

This new film reunites the beloved actors, but separates them into two parallel stories. At Downton, Lady Mary and the crew watch the movie with interest, from silence to conversation. At another luxurious villa on the French Riviera, Sir Robert and Lady Violet's family discover another deep love, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, with a troubled and lovely past.

Of course, with full player participation, we can't expect all characters to have the same exposure on screen. While it's nice to see something good happen with Mr. Molly (Kevin Doyle), it's a little disappointing that there isn't much here for John and Anna Bates or Lady Merton's Isobel Grey. Series creator and screenwriter Julian Fellowes tries to squeeze in a little something for everyone and wraps things up with a nice bow. 7/10.
