Review of THE CONTRACTOR: Sketchy Sideline

Because he was on medication for a knee injury, James Harper (Chris Pine) was fired from the US Army's Special Forces, leaving him without his entitlements, including retirement and health care. Desperate for a source of income to support his wife and child, he agrees to work with his best friend Mike (Ben Foster) as a contractor for a company run by a fellow military man, led by veteran Rusty Jennings (Kiefer Sutherland).
Jennings' group carried out missions that threatened national security. Harper's first black mission took him to Berlin, Germany, to spy and later gain access to the data files of virology research scientist Salem Muhammad Mohsen (Fares Faris) , dubbed a Class A bioterrorist. Not going as planned, Harper had to escape and try to survive several assassination attempts on his way back to the United States.
The plot of this ex-military story was somewhat stereotypical, and many famous actors have been seen doing it during lean months for strictly paid pay. The first thirty minutes we learn about the life of James Harper as he copes with his unexpected leave from the army by taking on this job. Once things go wrong, you already know how it will end, following the typical plot of these movies.
Chris Pine had a screen presence that eclipsed anyone else on that screen, a true movie star. Like Private James Harper, he was always clever and cunning, afloat and always in motion. He seemed believable as a soldier and moved in his battles and other action scenes. His dramatic scenes were good too, especially in that climax confrontation scene about 10 minutes before the movie ends.
What sets this film apart are flashbacks that show Harper's physical abuse as a child in the shadow of her father's toxic masculinity. This gave James a creepy backstory that he didn't want to happen between him and his son Jack. Everything else was so predictable other than that, that even Ben Foster and Kiefer Sutherland created the characters they played. 5/10.
